Effectively align the available resources, both internally and external to the university, to develop and curate industry, business and foundation partnerships. Responsibility for this important function rests, in part, with the Industry and Community Liaison Specialist who will work in close consultation with the Director of IEM and will act as an institute-wide key point of contact to direct industry and community partners to IEM faculty and programs and to connect IEM faculty and researchers with potential industry and community collaborators, sponsors and supporters.

The position will be focused on developing research opportunities both among existing collaborators such as those partnered with our large Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance and matching industry research sponsors with research labs and investigators, and working with new ventures to take advantage of the UC San Diego innovation ecosystem in MedTech and Biotech, and developing industry internship and coop programs. The position will also engage in fund raising and events that support IEMs outreach and research missions. The liaison will exercise initiative in identifying and developing relationships with and between appropriate campus and external resources to enhance partnership and collaboration between IEM and businesses or community organizations. The primary duties of the Liaison will include: 1) Marketing and outreach; 2) Relationship development; 3) Strategic analysis and advice; and 4) Other duties in support of the ORU.

Coordinates and implements an industry and community alliance program. Responsible for initiating, maintaining and expanding partnerships. Coordinates and plans related promotional events.

This position may be eligible for a flexible work arrangement, which could include a non-standard work schedule, and/or the ability to work off-site part of the time. The employee shall be available full-time during assigned work hours (specific hours to be discussed with supervisor).


  • Graduation from college with a major in business administration, economics, educational administration, science, engineering, or an allied field, and four (4) years of experience in administrative analysis or operations research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of communication principles, media, and marketing techniques.At least one year of marketing or sales experience.

  • Experience in business, health, engineering, science or equivalent discipline in order to be able to understand and communicate effectively about UCSD technologies and UCSD faculty expertise and research interests.

  • Broad knowledge about University and industry research pertaining to specific industry alliance program.

  • Strong communication skills including active listening and critical thinking. Highly developed political acumen skills and social perceptiveness. Skilled business development tactics to persuade and influence. Strong written and verbal presentation skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently analyze complex problems, conduct research, interpret trends, identify various options, draw conclusions, develop and implement innovative and cost effective solutions that meet the objectives of the Department despite competing and changing priorities.

  • Ability to work with a diverse group at all levels of the organization including faculty, staff, students and industry partners. Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence and motivation. Experience working with senior executives and C-­level individuals. Experience and success with working in a team environment.

  • Productive in work volume, speed, quality and consistency. Ability to see projects through to completion on deadline and satisfy industry partner and University goals. Strong project management skills. Ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities with competing timelines.

  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in the Microsoft Suite. Effectively uses software applications specific to industry alliance. Demonstrated experience with, and ability to develop and use, computer applications and capabilities to create and maintain databases, and produce correspondence, reports and tools for analysis and review

  • Ability to break down complex concepts and communicate them in an understandable way.

  • Ability and experience with delivering concise updates to supervisor.

  • Self­-motivated with focus and initiative to develop path and strategy with nominal direction.

  • Thorough knowledge of marketing mediums and funding sources.

  • Ability to draw information from diverse sources and provide analysis and recommendations.


  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $63,400 - $142,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $30.36 - $68.39

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
