The UCSD Department of Radiology offers challenging career opportunities, cutting-edge research, and state-of-the-art services for basic, animal, clinical, and translational studies. Its facilities alongside collaborative affiliations with Scripps Radiology, the VA San Diego Healthcare System’s Radiology Department, the VA Microimaging Core, the Center for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CFMRI), and the Center for Translational Imaging and Precision Medicine (CTIPM) provide a rich research environment.
The Ultrashort Echo Time (UTE) Imaging Lab is a multi-disciplinary group of radiologists, physicists, engineers, clinical specialists, and research support staff that plays a leading role in the development, validation, and evaluation of novel and cutting-edge non-invasive evaluation of musculoskeletal (MSK) tissue structure and function in both health and disease/injury conditions to the clinical research stage. The UTE Imaging Lab’s portfolio is comprised of several parallel-running multiyear federally funded studies focused on a wide array of tissues as well as ongoing industry-sponsored research collaborations with industry giants such as GE Healthcare. The UTE Imaging Lab’s premier research team uses state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging technology to conduct sophisticated biomedical research projects that have led to discoveries in major areas including traumatic brain injury, osteoarthritis, multiple sclerosis, and other disease conditions.
Under supervision, incumbent executes major research projects including quantitative histological tissue sample preparation and sectioning, immunoreagent development, microscopy, and quantitative image analysis including confocal microscopy. Incumbent independently analyzes and interprets experimental results, refining experimental design as necessary. Incumbent evaluates and compares methods and results to those established and predicted by the published literature. Evaluates, describes, and documents methods and results for publication and grant applications. Incumbent will include animal handling and maintenance, biochemical assays, and other duties as assigned.
Advanced familiarity with histology processing including preparation of paraffin sections, and cryo sections.
Advanced theoretical knowledge of work in a quantitative field (such as graduation from college with major work in engineering, physical science, neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, computer science) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proven experience processing tissues and cells, preparation of sections, and performing histological staining procedures.
Demonstrated experience working with computers, including software such as Excel and Microsoft Office.
Experience with image processing/analysis software such as ImageJ.
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Demonstrated ability to maintain quality control in research projects.Skill and ability to keep accurate records.
Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, to interact professionally and effectively in the workenvironment; and, to effectively and accurately document research procedures.
Knowledge in basic math for analysis of data.
Experience in the technologies required for analysis of tissues by histology, immunohistochemistry, andhistochemistry.
Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility with the ability to work in a team framework.
- Knowledge of UCSD Environmental Health and Safety requirements.

- Available to work variable hours when needed.
