The mission of the newly founded Data Science Institute is to advance the scientific foundations for this exciting new field, and to support education and training of students who will be the new leaders in this area. Digital data have emerged as central to addressing critical societal needs and enhancing the quality of life in the coming decades. Data science touches virtually all aspects of life on our planet. At the campus level, UC San Diego already has tremendous strength in this area, ranging across all segments of the university. For this reason, the Institute has been established as an independent unit that works collaboratively with schools, divisions, departments, centers, and faculty and students across the entire campus. The Institute is directed by the Director, who reports to an Oversight Committee chaired by the Chancellor. The Institute will be the administrative home for the newly established undergraduate B.S. major and minor in Data Science, and will work with departments and the Academic Senate to create additional graduate programs in data science. The institute will support collaborations between researchers across campus and will also provide critical resources to support innovation in data science.

Under the supervision of the Student Affairs Manager, this position provides professional staff support for the administration and implementation of the M.S. and Ph.D programs in the Halicioglu Data Science Institute (HDSI).

The graduate student advisor will ensure that all students are making progress towards their degree and career goals while remaining within established university and program guidelines and regulations. Independently responsible for student affairs functions, which include but are not limited to student curriculum advising, coordinating admission to the graduate degree programs, student matriculation and graduation. The incumbent is responsible for the overall coordination and administration of the annual graduate admissions process, including outreach, and departmental and institutional development. In collaboration with the student affairs team, the graduate advisor will support faculty initiatives to encourage student academic success; maintain all graduate student databases; assist with designing, authoring and maintaining graduate web page; assist w/ financial analysis and planning for graduate program.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Proven experience to counsel undergraduate and graduate on programs and curriculum.

  • Ability to develop, plan and execute workshops, orientations, seminars and other student programming efforts. Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking. Excellent organizational skills, attention to accuracy and detail, creative problem solving skills, ability to prioritize multiple tasks that have conflicting priorities and deadline.

  • Ability to plan, develop, implement, manage and evaluate multiple programmatic activities independently and in a timely, efficient and accurate manner. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to write concisely, persuasively, and in summary form.

  • Skill to compose, edit and proofread correspondence and narrative sections of printed information. Ability to express verbally, or in writing, one's position, plan of action, evaluation or interpretation in a professional, concise, and courteous manner. Ability to multi-task; verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to compile, interpret, and analyze data utilizing a variety of resources. Skills and knowledge to identify, gather, and analyze information (including statistical material) into meaningful reports and/or documents. Ability to analyze complex policies and regulations and exercise sound judgment in their application.

  • Ability to evaluate academic records and make analytical decisions.
