Under the direction of the Student Affairs Manager, position is responsible for: curriculum planning/development/administration; graduate program management; all student-related activities and other educational matters pertaining to prospective and enrolled graduate students. This includes but is not limited to: serving as key advisor to the Department Chair, Curriculum Committee, MSO and all faculty on matters relating to the curriculum and graduate student affairs; interpretation and implementation of appropriate policies, regulations, and procedures; participation in short-term and long-term departmental goals and objectives; management and oversight of graduate student advising; overseeing student enrollment and scheduling of courses; financial management and long-range planning for student support issues; data development and management to include all related analyses; and all other activities associated with graduate affairs for the Department of Cognitive Science.
Oversight and management of the Joint Doctoral Program in Language and Communicative Disorders between San Diego State and UC San Diego. The cooperating faculties of San Diego State University (SDSU) and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) offer a joint doctoral program (PhD) in Language and Communicative Disorders. The program’s focus is the interdisciplinary study of language and communicative disorders.
Applies professional Student Services concepts. Provides varied student services to students, faculty, and department / school / college management. Works on moderately complex issues. Receives assistance on more complex issues.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Theoretical and practical knowledge in policies and procedures relating to graduate students and curriculum administration, to advise students, faculty, administrators and others about academic policies and requirements and to implement the department’s goals and objectives for the graduate program.
Knowledge of Cognitive Science course content and faculty areas of interest. Ability to clearly explain and offer guidance on university and departmental regulations, procedures, and policies to current and prospective students. Experience in higher education and an understanding of the academic process.
Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases. Working knowledge of, StudentLink, World Wide Web, ISIS, and other PC-related software to manage and streamline workload. Theoretical knowledge of computer and information management.
Knowledge of University processes and procedures. Knowledge of University, campus and departmental policies and procedures related to all fiscal and personnel matters with the campus. Ability to analyze which policies and procedures apply to a given situation. Clear understanding of the campus’ overall administrative goals.
Understanding of University rules and regulations.
Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to represent UCSD appropriately to internal and external constituents. Must be skilled at negotiating conflicts among staff, faculty and students.

Demonstrated understanding of the philosophy of quality service and group process, with proven aptitude for working as part of a team. Skill to compose, edit and proofread narrative sections of printed information. Ability to express verbally one’s position, plan of action, evaluation or interpretation in a professional, concise, and courteous manner.
Working knowledge of accounting principles, business math and bookkeeping for budget planning and analysis. Strong, demonstrational fiscal/accounting skills. Experience with and knowledge of finance, general accounting practices, business management, fund accounting, audit trails, and use of cost-centers.
Demonstrated ability to extract pertinent information from computerized databases and other sources, conduct analyses, and prepare proposals and reports. Excellent mathematical skills for calculations involving data projections and adjustments. Skill in determining suitable utilization of computer applications to performance of task. Ability to modify existing programs as appropriate
Ability to analyze work situation and implement long range plans to develop systems and procedures to fulfill complex organizational needs. Ability to formulate and retain sight of long range plans and goals while dealing with a myriad of day-to-day problems
Skills and knowledge to supervise, delegate and set priorities. Ability to adjust to shifting priorities and work under short deadline situations while maintaining composure.
