This is a 100% contract position for one (1) year with the possibility of extension or depending on project support needs.


The Coastal Processes Group within IOD focuses on observing and modeling coastal processes including beach evolution, cliff erosion, and nearshore waves. The monitoring program for San Diego county is one of the most comprehensive shoreline observing systems in the world. Beaches, cliffs, and waves have been monitored at select San Diego sites since 2001 using in-situ instruments, GPS equipped platforms, mobile and stationary LiDAR, and photogrammetric unmanned aircraft systems (UAS/drones).


Under general supervision, perform a variety of programming, GIS, and data analysis procedures related to lidar, oceanographic, GIS data, beach surveys, and the preparation of data plots and figures for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations. Tasks include: database management, quality control, processing and analysis of oceanographic datasets; writing algorithms for the processing geospatial data; fieldwork to assist with routine coastal surveys; developing best practices for data collection and management; documentation and organization of field work records; project website design, development, and maintenance. Share responsibility for the computer program management, including system administration tasks of the Coastal Processes Group within the Integrative Oceanography Division. Design, write, modify, debug and implement associated application software, with emphasis on MATLAB, PYTHON, HTML, PHP, and GIS applications.

Uses professional GIS concepts and applications to resolve a variety of analysis and research issues. Works on assignments of moderate scope where data analysis requires a review of various factors. Assists in additional analyses as needed to achieve research objectives.


  • Working knowledge of GIS software, applications programming, database, and table structure and design, user interface and experience design, and web application development. Proven ability with GIS software programs such as ESRI.

  • Expertise with computer data manipulation, web applications, and presentation tools. (e.g. Matlab, Python, HTML, PHP, GIS applications, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Powerpoint).

  • Experience with data management and working with large data sets.

  • Experience processing and analyzing point cloud (e.g. lastools) and topographic data.

  • Demonstrated project management skills. Understanding of cartographic skills to create spatially explicit map products.

  • Interpersonal skills to work with technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to interact using tact and diplomacy with diverse personalities, including academic, staff, student, and volunteer employees and institutions/organizations. Ability to work collaboratively.

  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely.

  • Self-motivated, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem-solving skills. Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments. Ability to work on more than one task simultaneously. Able to learn quickly and work both independently and collaboratively.

  • Demonstrated strong commitment to customer service, attention to detail, and continuous improvement.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. Proven skill in communicating clearly, effectively, tactfully, and patiently in person, on the telephone, and in writing. Ability to present a positive impression in person, on the telephone, and through writing.
