DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego and employs 486+ full-time salaried faculty members and 100+ academic appointees. Staff personnel includes 600+ staff in 9 bargaining units, students, and volunteers. There are 250 clinical faculty practicing at multiple sites and hospitals.

Gastro-Esophageal Oncogenesis, Dysmotiliy and Evolution (GEODE) is an innovative cutting-edge research program at the University of California San Diego with the goal to advance our understanding of the complex mechanisms driving the development and progression of gastroesophageal cancer and motility disorders. GEODE studies will focus on better defining the roles of host genetic, non-genetic, and microbial factors in development of motility disorders and premalignancy, along with roles in evolution to cancer.

Under direction of the Principal Investigators (PIs), GEODE Research Coordinator is responsible for coordination of the foregut biorepository and monitoring and ensuring regulatory compliance and documentation for GEODE research operations. Specific responsibilities related to the foregut biorepository will include subject screening, recruitment and enrollment, biospecimen collection and storage, and follow-up of subjects within the program. Specific responsibilities for regulatory compliance will include preparation of applications, informed consents and protocol documents for submission to Human Subject's Institutional Review Board (IRB), as well as advising and consulting with investigators, staff, IRB personnel regarding the protection of human subjects in research, compliance with federal regulations and University policy and review of human research.

The position will include coordinating logistics for tissue samples to be prepared and sent for genomic sequencing across UCSD Core Facilities. For this, the position may also include some laboratory preparation of biospecimen samples (histology and molecular biology for sample DNA libraries) to be used for multi-omics experiments performed within UCSD, e.g. Moores Cancer Center Genomics and Computational Biology shared resource, or sent to outside laboratories as needed. Knowledge related to biospecimen preparation is preferred but not mandatory.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven experience in conducting clinical trials including experience in research protocol start up procedures, outreach, recruitment, and screening of research subjects.

  • Knowledge and experience with IRB policies and procedures.

  • Experience with experimental design and methodology, and reviewing published scientific data in journals, as well as online using search engines and subject-specific websites.

  • Experience taking patient history, evaluating patient problems and providing accurate and complete documentation in patient record.

  • Effective interpersonal, as well as written and verbal communication skills (using grammatically correct written English and accurate typing) to interact with a variety of personalities at all levels of the organization, exercising tact, mature judgment, diplomacy, and flexibility to promote positive working relationships and job effectiveness. Excellent phone etiquette skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to interact in a professional manner with a diverse group of people to include, but not limited to study sponsors, clinical research organizations, internal teams, and funding agencies.

  • Proven ability to train and educate patients, staff, residents, medical students and the general community regarding clinic services/procedures, hospital procedures and necessary patient instructions.

  • Strong computer proficiency, including word processing, spreadsheet software and internet browser applications. Thorough database management skills.

  • Experience with cost accounting as applied to both University and Medical Center functions. Proven knowledge of medical billing and collections guidelines and procedures.

  • Proven experience with electronic medical record systems and progress notation.

  • Demonstrated experience handling human tissues.

  • Thorough knowledge of and compliance with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Policies regulating the Principal Investigator's responsibilities in the conduct of clinical trials involving human subjects.

  • Familiarity with Gastroenterology conditions and terminology.

  • Thorough knowledge of State, Federal, and University Health and Safety rules governing the principles of biosafety affecting laboratory practice and techniques.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity and interest in biological science such as Biology, Microbiology or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience handling and processing biospecimens such as histology and blood.
  • Experience in negotiations and analysis of clinical trial budgets.
  • Familiarity with gastrointestinal motility/esophageal physiology and gastroesophageal malignancies.
  • Experience with REDCap.
