The Technology and Digital Experience program focuses on supporting the library and our academic community through a range of digital experiences and platforms - from technical infrastructure supporting our web-based platforms to the strategic design of digital user experiences and the management of technology services in our library spaces. In doing so the program will support the library as a place for community and scholarship by providing students with diverse, inclusive, accessible, safe and resource-rich physical and digital spaces that are centered on supporting the academic experience. Technology and Digital Experience is made up of distinct units that operate with strategic guidance from the program director, but objectives, deliverables, and unit strategy will be set by the unit managers. Given the cross-program nature of our work TDX will have roles in advisory groups that inform our digital library and digital user experience strategies.

The Applications Development team works on software systems and platforms that can range from custom internal business tools to cross-campus, open-source platforms for showcasing digital content. Our portfolio includes the digital repository designed to store and manage digital assets of UC San Diego. Our combined technical resources, including web, mainframe and infrastructure are the foundation of the applications we develop and represent the close and cooperative DevOps relationship, an agile and iterative process, and a strategic partner in the Library’s mission.

Under the supervision of the Applications Development Manager and as a member of the applications development team, this position performs moderately complex development and integration services in support of the Library’s digital services. These services are critical to the implementation and maintenance of the department’s digital asset management system, various billing applications, and numerous other web sites and applications. This position will review legacy applications for renewal including converting java applications to ruby and reviewing existing software processes with central ITS’ renewal projects, and refactoring applications as needs arise. This role will also step into new projects in collaborative open-source environments where peer review, pairing, and feedback will come from team members inside and outside of the department.

Applies professional programming concepts for small to medium-sized projects or portions of larger projects. Resolves a variety of programming design and implementation issues. Works on programming assignments of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.

  • Intermediate skills associated with the design, development, modification and deployment of software, including object-oriented programming concepts.

  • Experience performing code review of pull requests as part of the software development process workflow. Includes verifying test coverage and code style guide is followed.

  • Proven knowledge of web programming, including substantial experience with web scripting and languages (such as Ruby, Java, Javascript, Python, C#, PHP, C++, or Swift). Proven ability to develop web applications across various platforms and browsers.

  • Knowledge of secure software development. Experience with common programming tools.

  • Demonstrated strong customer experience values and skills.
