The Marine Physical Laboratory division at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is seeking a Financial Services Analyst 2. The incumbent's duties shall include:

  • Various MPL recharge activities, including MPL Machine Shop, Navy Fee, and Administrative Fee.
  • Gathers, analyzes, and formats data for recharge rate review.
  • Supports Shop superintendent, responds to requests related to work orders and charges.
  • Perform a variety of fiscal and administrative duties associated with maintaining departmental reporting and chart of accounts. Performs analysis and reconciles monthly expenditure reports.
  • Oversee the processing and billing of outside purchase orders for services and program income awards.
  • Assists with the management of various departmental fund sources.
  • Applies organization policies and procedures to resolve a variety of moderately complicated issues.
  • Works on financial services problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
  • Program Income Management: Oversee and administer all operational/accounting functions within NSF Program Income awards, including coordination and administration of internal financial compliance within UCSD accounting system.

Candidates hired into this position may have the ability to work hybrid - remote for (1) one year duration with the potential to be renewed annually.


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Working knowledge of financial processes, policies and procedures. Ability to interpret and analyze financial data; knowledge of and ability to apply UC policies and procedures regarding fund accounting. Strong demonstrated skills related to fund accounting principles.

  • Strong knowledge of financial data management and reporting systems. Strong proven ability to accurately analyze the general ledger and other accounting documents. Knowledge of general accounting practices, procedures, and theory of accounts.

  • Proficiency in the use of spreadsheet and database software. Ability to summarize, design and compile reports on Excel spreadsheets.

  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills both oral and written. Ability to interact effectively and constructively with a wide range of changing personalities in person, over the phone, and via email exercising tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality with emphasis on flexibility and professionalism. Demonstrated ability and experience to work effectively and cooperatively as part of a team.

  • Ability to maintain and keep information strictly confidential. Ability to act and resolve discrepancies as MPL resource person for recharge operations. Demonstrated ability to identify problems and successfully coordinate solutions. Excellent problem solving skills with ability to exercise good judgement.

  • Experience with recharge accounts, costing principles, and recharge rate derivation principles.

  • Intermediate knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources. Demonstrated experience with UC accounting and bookkeeping procedures.

  • Strong math skills including the ability to work with percentages; ability to analyze budgets in relation to shifting expenses for adjustments and ability to project costs.

  • Demonstrated skill using computers and software.

  • Accuracy/detail orientation, including ability to complete forms thoroughly and efficiently with accuracy.

  • Skills to provide coaching and mentoring to support staff.


  • Work location is in Point Loma with occasion meetings in La Jolla.
  • Per University of California policy PPSM 21-Appointment, this position has a background check requirement and offer of employment is contingent upon candidate clearing the background check process.
  • Must be US Citizen or permanent resident in order to access work location.
  • Must be willing to work overtime when necessary.
