The Center for Research in Biological Systems (CRBS) is a UCSD Center that exists to provide human resources, high technology equipment, and administrative services to scientists researching cell structure and function relationships in central nervous system processes, cardiovascular networking, and muscular contraction through multiple scales and modalities.
CRBS facilitates an interdisciplinary infrastructure in which people from biology, medicine, chemistry, and physics can work with those from computer science and information technologies in collaborative research. Researchers share interests in the study of complex biological systems at many scales, from the structures of enzymes, proteins, and the body's chemical communications network at atomic and molecular levels, to an organism's physiology, strength, and support at cellular and tissue levels.
Uses skills as a subject matter expert in post award research administration to independently manage research awards and transactions related to contract and grant management, and maintain contract and grant records in compliance with institutional research sponsor policies. Under minimal supervision, the incumbent performs full award administration, and analytical and strategic reporting for a multi-PI proposal portfolio. This position requires exceptional customer service skills.
Assignments include multiple PI's, center's recharge activites, multiple funding sources, multiple institutions, and multiple sites. Manages research awards of diverse scope where analysis of data requires thorough understanding of complex regulations and requirements.
Comprehensive post award management includes using strong analytical skills for allocation and expense monitoring, understanding of agency-specific requirements, detailed and timely reporting, and advisement to faculty. All post award transactions will be supported by this position.
Additionally, the fund manger will be required to manage, analyze and report on non-research funds.
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent sponsored research financial management experience. Demonstrated knowledge of scientific terminology.
Three (3+) or more years of relevant experience.
Thorough understanding of research administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment. Proven efficiency and accuracy in the preparation grant budgets of all types.Familiarity with federal, state, and private agency contract and grant regulations.
Ability to manage significant volume of transactions. Skill in prioritizing a high volume workload to ensure priorities and other deadlines are met. Ability to work in pressure situations to meet deadlines and accommodate interruptions. Ability to maintain flexibility to redirect efforts when priorities change. Competence with all transaction functions including purchasing, account reconciliation, accounts payable and receivable systems, and eCERT.
Ability to perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting. Ability to provide comprehensive and effective post award reporting, working directly with faculty tomanage funding per sponsor requirements. Ability to analyze expenditures, recognize trends and support budget allowability consistent with agency requirements.
Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports. Experience in budget preparation using automated spreadsheet systems. Excellent skill in using a variety of computer systems, including spreadsheet, database, word-processing, and Internet systems. Must have demonstrated expertise with MS Office: Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint. Skill in math and accurate accounting practices. Must be adept with fiscal tools. Skill in setting up and maintaining accurate filing systems.
Ability to maintain independent judgment; strong organization and communication skills; and a customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas. Ability toanticipate and fulfill customer needs, autonomy, and initiative. Strong problem-solving and organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to exercise discretion to solve problems. The employee must be trustworthy and ethical and exhibit a high degree ofintegrity. Ability to deliver consistently high levels of customer service at all times, and develop successful relationships with both UCSD faculty and staff.
Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration.
Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles.
Ability to independently interpret and implement appropriate UCSD and agency policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Subject matter expert in fund management.
Proven proficiency in complex fund management with minimal supervision.
- Competent with UCSD information systems that promote excellent fund management.
- Experience with UCSD online and web-based accounting systems (Oracle Financial System, CONCUR)
- Five (5) years of experience.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $53,600 - $111,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $25.67 - $53.45
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
