This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at Moores Cancer Center and remote.
The Moores Cancer Center is one of just 51 in the United States to hold a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. As such, it ranks among the top centers in the nation conducting basic and clinical cancer research, providing advanced patient care and serving the community through outreach and education programs. The Cancer Center's mission is to translate promising scientific discoveries into new and better options for the care of patients with cancer. The Center supports one of the broadest ranges of cancer activities in the nation - from fundamental and translational cancer research in molecular genetics and advanced molecular therapeutics, and from population studies of cancer incidence to community education about cancer prevention and risk reduction.
Under supervision, the Financial Analyst will support the financial management of the Moores Cancer Center. Participates in the annual budget review and preparation and serves as a resource for department administrators. Performs monthly routine tasks such as direct retros, fund changes, and other transactions along with variety of analysis and provides recommendations regarding the most efficient use of resources. Perform financial and operational transactional roles within the Department, including approval of employee reimbursement and other expense transactions, and review of samples from department transaction sampling plan. Incumbent will also serve as primary contact with Shared Resource Cores and provide routine reports and analysis including budgeting, projections and forecasting, and assist with updating rates. Complete projects accepted from a diverse range of personnel, support the research, analysis, and evaluation of financial and operational proposals and relevant policies, procedures, and regulations. Provide forecasts and recommendations as requested.
Six (6) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two (2) years of related experience/training.
Experience with budget preparation process for grant proposals and monitoring of budget expenses. Knowledge of basic accounting principles and how they relate to the budgeting process. Experience with accounts receivable and payable.
Demonstrated ability using spreadsheet and database software for moderately complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
Experience with purchase orders, budget transfers, travel vouchers, reimbursements and disbursement processes and procedures.
Working knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems.
Ability to gather reasonably retrievable information to organize, and perform basic financial analysis assignments. Excellent analytical skills. Proven ability to develop, analyze, and carry out program and project objectives and work with others in achieving department goals. Ability to research, gather and organize information to produce concise reports using various resources.
Demonstrated ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing clearly and concisely.
Effective interpersonal skills at all levels within the unit; excellent service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment.
Intermediate knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
Perform administrative analysis, analytical research, develop and present various financial reports to the clinical leadership of the clinical operating units, programs, and projects.
Proven ability to perform financial and / or resource analysis such as budget forecasts, staff or salary analysis, historical trend analysis, and data reliability verification.
Proven ability to coordinate fiscal closing procedures, ensuring compliance with University and agency requirements and preparing financial close-out reports.
Experience developing clear and concise methods for gathering, structuring and reporting institutional data to allow easy presentation of final data analysis.
Demonstrated experience evaluating data and identifying issues, options and alternate solutions; formulating and presenting recommendations.
- Experience with UCSD financial software applications and policies/procedures.
- Knowledge of UCSD policies and procedures, including accounting, and purchase of supplies and equipment.
- Experience with and knowledge of UCSD procedures and protocols such as working with Contracts and Grants Administration, Animal Subjects Office, Human Research Protection Program, Mail Services, Biomedical Library, Academic Computing Services, Office of Learning Resources, etc.
- Familiarity with University forms.
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
- Must be able to work overtime in the evenings or on the weekend as needed.
