The division of Medical Education within the UC San Diego School of Medicine (UCSD SOM) consists of four major units: Admissions & Student Affairs; Undergraduate Medical Education; Graduate Medical Education; and Continuing Medical Education & Faculty Development. These units are supported by core services units: Business Affairs, Educational Technology, and Evaluation & Assessment. The division supports the education, training and co-curricular activities of 536 medical students, 800 residents and fellows, as well as the faculty, physician and healthcare providers at UCSD’s School of Medicine, its' Medical Centers, and affiliates.
The Physician Assistant Program is a self-supporting master’s degree program within the Medical Education Division, that educates state-licensed or federally credentialed health care professionals who play a major role in US health care delivery. The PA Program is a 27-month program and is governed by the UC Office of the President and UC San Diego Campus.
Housed within the Medical Education Division, the Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME) is responsible for the oversight, coordination, and general management of over 80 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited programs as well as several American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) certified programs and numerous non-accredited fellowships, totaling approximately 1000 trainees. GME disseminates and implements ACGME policies, guidelines and compliance measures; ensures compliance with California Medical Board licensure and Department of Homeland Security visa regulations; coordinates the National Residency Match Program (NRMP); interprets and applies State and Federal laws; works closely with university entities and affiliated institutions to develop and assure the quality of educational curriculum of its training programs; and, negotiates affiliation agreements. GME also administers the benefits package for housestaff which includes heath, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance; the housestaff on-call meal program, and the affiliate reimbursement program.
The position provides financial support, analysis and management to the Medical Education Division business office, PA program and GME. This position will be responsible for the annual budget, monthly tracking, billing, budgeting/allocation of resources, internal controls and financial reporting for these areas. This position services as a key contact to address issues and concerns regarding finance topics from UCSD SOM Departments, Medical Center, affiliates and leadership.
Seven (7) years of related Finance experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor’s degree in related area plus three (3) years of related experience/training.
Working knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems. Proven ability to analyze and prepare budgets, to identify spending patterns and project future expenditures. Proven ability to analyze financial issues, recognize potential impact, identify solutions and make recommendations.
Ability to gather reasonably retrievable information to organize, and perform basic financial analysis assignments. Experience in analyzing large quantities of financial data, summarizing and extracting data, compiling relevant information in a variety of appropriate formats.
Demonstrated ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing clearly and concisely.
Demonstrated ability using spreadsheet and database software for moderately complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
Effective interpersonal skills at all levels within the unit; excellent service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. Ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment.
Intermediate knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
Strong, ability to maintain tact, poise, diplomacy, confidentiality and hospitality with a diverse population of staff, faculty, industry, and the community in a high pressure and demanding environment.
