Birch Aquarium at Scripps is the non-profit public exploration center for world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the aquarium features more than 60 habitats of fish and invertebrates from the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest to the tropical waters of Mexico and beyond. An interactive museum showcases research discoveries by Scripps scientists on climate, earth and ocean science and features five-dozen interactive elements. Birch Aquarium has an annual attendance of more than 460,000. The aquarium is the largest provider of K-12 ocean science education in San Diego County, reaching more than 55,000 school children each year through its on- and off-site programs.

Under direction of the Facilities Manager at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, responsible for supporting all aspects of facilities maintenance for the Aquarium. Provides oversight and management of all custodial functions. Prioritize and plan specific work assignments in accordance with the needs of the Aquarium. Provide information to the team to ensure effective planning and the ability to carry out scheduled work. Supervise custodial staff and provide oversight and work direction of other unit staff in the absence of the Facilities Manager. Train and assign work to new and continuing employees. Meet with frontline units to coordinate activities and schedule work/cleaning to be performed to ensure the effective utilization of staff, materials and equipment and completion of the project on schedule. With oversight from the Facilities Manager, support the installation of special aquarium equipment and life support systems.
Perform and oversee semi skilled work as needed per the preventative maintenance schedule and/or to maintain secure and safety systems. Coordinate with UC San Diego and Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) maintenance staff and outside contractors for major repairs. Assist with the development of new exhibits, deferred maintenance and Aquarium expansion. Responsible for long-term budgeting for all aspects of custodial functions. With oversight from the facilities manager, be responsible for planning of preventative maintenance and execution of modifications to the facility and supervision same when performed by outside sources. Manage all expenses related to the custodial operations including needed supplies, approve overtime, and equipment purchases, maintenance, and rentals. Support the unit's responsible for safety and security of facility, related to on-site visitors and after-hours security and staffing. Respond to emergency situations involving seawater, plumbing, electrical and other potentially hazardous conditions. Act as a Building Coordinator for organization emergency / disaster preparedness for the Facilities unit.
Two years experience managing a custodial and/or facilities operation at an aquarium or similar venue.
Proven management experience to effectively utilizes staff, materials, and equipment to ensure the completion of projects on schedule.
Proven skills to preform and supervises semi-skilled work involving plumbing systems, carpentry, and electrical work.
Working knowledge of practices and procedures relating to facility maintenance.
Working organizational skills to work on multiple projects with competing deadlines, to establish goals and work load priorities, and to meet project deadlines within budget and time constraints.
Working knowledge of practices and procedures of safety and emergency preparedness.
Written communication skills to prepare a variety of correspondence, reports, policies and procedures, and training documents.
Skills to work under pressure of deadlines in a stressful environment.
Active listening, interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills to effectively resolve questions, concerns, issues or problems and ensure cooperative and productive working relationships.
Skills to work independently and as part of a team.
