This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite on Campus and remote.
DESCRIPTION
The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science is dedicated to creating and promoting public health innovations to advance equity, justice, and wellbeing for all and has more than 80 primary salaried faculty, 20 secondary faculty, 250+ personnel, 225 postgraduate students, and over 650 undergraduate majors. The School includes activities in the public health disciplines of biostatistics and bioinformatics, epidemiology, global health, health policy, health behavior, health equity, public mental health, environmental and climate health, and preventive medicine.
The School has strong collaborative research programs facilitated by Research Centers of Excellence focused on wireless and population health systems, health promotion and equity, women's health, and tobacco control, and has extensive collaborations with the School of Medicine, Jacobs School of Engineering, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Moores Cancer Center, Design Lab, Qualcomm Institute, ACTRI, HDSI, Skaggs School of Pharmacy, and with other partners across the UC San Diego campus. Partnerships with the community and health agencies are fundamental to the School.
The School houses five recharge cores providing services to UC San Diego and external customers. Research in the School includes ~$125M total awarded grants and contracts. The School has and administers two PhD programs (public health and biostatistics), a Master of Public Health professional degree program, a MS in Biostatistics, the only Health Sciences undergraduate program (BSPH), a Master of Applied Science in Leadership of Healthcare Organizations run in conjunction with UC San Diego Extension, and a Preventive Medicine Residency program.
Under supervision, the Staff Research Assistant will assist EPARC leadership with measurement, and direct participant engagement, for a variety of research studies using a combination of direct physical measurement using gold-standard equipment, validated field measures, and remote devices. Additionally, the successful candidate will provide direct participant instruction in exercise form and prescription/progression and will utilize motivational interviewing to assist in goal setting and promote behavior change.
Primary areas of responsibility will include direct participant engagement for data collection and ensuring adherence to protocol; assisting with participant preparation and safety, data collection from commercial and clinical tools, data entry and coding; clinical data quality control; and general lab logistics and administration.
Areas of assessment include: aerobic capacity, muscular strength, and endurance, body composition, functional capacity, physical activity (i.e. total movement) using observation and accelerometry, nutritional status, and cognition.
Areas of instruction include: one-on-one training for aerobic or strength goals, group training for fall prevention, and behavioral modification counseling.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Theoretical knowledge of Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience at the level of bachelor's (or higher) degree.
Demonstrated experience in performing assessments of movement and balance using a variety of laboratory and free-living devices. Knowledge of patterns and abnormalities of gait, balance, strength, and neuromuscular coordination and integration.
Demonstrated ability to interpret exercise prescriptions and explain short and long-term goals to participants.
Demonstrated ability to identify contraindications to exercise.
Demonstrated ability to instruct participants in safely using both aerobic and resistance training equipment within a gym environment.
Must be CPR/AED certified.
Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact with individuals of varying ages, fitness levels, educational, and race/ethnicity backgrounds.
Demonstrated attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Ability to maintain and protect confidentiality of participant information including electronic and hard copy data records.
Ability to prioritize workload and work independently.
If not already in possession of current nationally recognized personal training certification, able and willing to attain within four (4) months of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Theoretical knowledge and familiarity with exercise stress testing protocols and safety procedures, and/or technologies used to monitor movement in free living environments.
Experience working with special populations (e.g., older adults).
Experience with injury prevention research and protocols.
Experience with office organization and supply chain administration.
Must have current certification by nationally recognized personal training organization (ACE, ACSM, NASM, or similar).

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $53,766 - $64,143 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $25.75 - $30.72
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).
If applicable, life-support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands-on practice and in-person skills assessment; online-only certification is not acceptable.
