The Enterprise Network group within ITS designs, implements and manages UC San Diego's networks focusing on wired/wireless data network operations, network architecture, installation and repair, voice and video, outside plant management, and telecom planning. The group includes Data Center Operations, Audio Visual Design and Installation, Media Event Services and Classroom Support which provides services for the UCSD campus, Scripps Institute of Oceanography and medical facilities.

The Electronics Technician installs audiovisual (AV) equipment for a wide variety of UC San Diego campus and UC San Diego Health projects from small systems to complex video conference room systems. The position will work independently and in a team of installers to complete projects. The Electronics Technician will also alter existing audiovisual systems and structures.


  • Install audiovisual equipment as part of campus and medical facilities projects from small systems to complex video conference room systems.
  • Install audiovisual systems for alterations of existing systems and structures for the campus and medical facilities.
  • Install complete audiovisual packages including but not limited to projectors, displays, wiring, cabling, computer controls, rack-building, control systems, sound systems, and video conference systems.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, isolate, and repair the cause of malfunctions of audiovisual equipment.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and repair of Media Event Support vehicles and electric carts including maintaining vehicle logs and working with professional repair facilities for the major repairs.
  • Troubleshoots malfunctions in emergency situations and performs emergency repairs at University locations such as classrooms, computer labs, and conference and seminar rooms.


  • Demonstrated experience and ability installing complete audiovisual packages including but not limited to projectors, displays, wiring, cabling, computer controls, rackbuilding, control systems, sound systems, computer hardware, and videoconference systems (including furniture installation and modification).

  • Demonstrated experience and ability in mounting and installing electric and manual projection screens with the ability to flush mount screens in a T-bar ceiling.

  • Knowledge of control systems including but not limited to Extron, Crestron, Biamp, and SP Control Media Wall Boxes software and programming IT modules.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable codes and regulations and ability to provide technical advice based on sound understanding of audiovisual principles and practice.

  • Demonstrated experience and skill in troubleshooting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing Media Event Support equipment. Audiovisual equipment includes all basic projection equipment including but not limited to projectors, displays, control systems, video players and recorders, tape recorders, printers, test equipment, broadcast quality cameras, document cameras, and whiteboards.

  • Demonstrated experience and skill using tools such as band saws, electric drills, cordless drills, electric circular saws, electric reciprocating saws, routers, electric jigsaws, power actuated guns, hand tools, volt/ohm meters, electronic test equipment, measurement tools, and soldering irons. Ability to lift 100 lbs, perform work at heights, climb ladders, work from scaffolding, pull cable, and work in tight small spaces for a long period of time.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications. Skill in reading and interpreting electronic schematic diagrams.


  • Must be available for overtime and weekend work.
  • Must be willing to work an alternate schedule.
  • Ability to drive a van and electric cart. Must provide proof of insurance, valid driver’s license, and clean driving record upon hire and each year thereafter. Will be a participant in the DMV Pull Notice Program.
  • Must be able to lift up to 100lbs, perform work at heights, climb ladders, work from scaffolding, pull cable, and work in tight small spaces for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to operate a scissor lift.
  • Must be trained in ladder safety and fall protection.
