DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs, with a dotted line to the Associate Vice Chancellor-Educational Innovation, the Director-Online Student Experience is a principal advisor to the Vice-Chancellor and Student Affairs Leadership Team, advising and leading a variety of initiatives and strategic projects that facilitates change and positively enhances access to Online Student Experiences at UC San Diego. Provides expert recommendations and develops short- and long-term goals and strategic plans, including the implementation of programs and policy changes to enhance the on-line student experience.

The Director leverages relationships and employs peer education and mentoring models to facilitate successful development, implementation and assessment of division-wide and campus collaborative efforts that are highly responsive, flexible and adaptable. Ensures ADA compliance and smooth day-to-day administrative operations for local, global, and online Student Experience needs, innovations and opportunities. The Director leads and manages programs and projects such as the Mentoring For All Program and works collaboratively with direction from Educational Innovation to support the co-curricular needs of Online Leaders.

The Director collaborates with the Academic Divisions, the Colleges, the Graduate Division, EDI, Extension, Global Initiatives, Career Services, Educational Innovation and other partners in the strategic planning, development and implementation of online engagement projects and initiatives that will be recognized as a Best Practice in online learning and new student experience delivery models and success. Represents the Office of the Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and the AVC-Educational Innovation with internal and external organizations through participation in campus-wide committees, work groups and taskforces to bring to fruition enhancements in online, remote and peer engagement initiatives, including other complex projects and programs as required. Has the authority to make decisions within the purview of the position on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor Student Affairs.

The Director provides a wide range of duties and expert solutions to complex issues that require tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, discretion, and flexibility while demonstrating core values of collaboration, inclusive excellence, student-centeredness, creativity, and integrity. Provides work direction to both professional and student staff and responsible for budget oversight.

Supervises two full time positions, a Program Coordinator and a Project Policy Analyst, that support the student online experience operations.

This position may work remotely, requiring a remote work agreement, anywhere in the United States. This position may be eligible for a flexible work arrangement, which could include a non-standard work schedule, and/or the ability to work off-site part of the time. The employee shall be available full-time during assigned work hours (specific hours to be discussed with supervisor).

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Expert knowledge of common organizational- or research-specific and other computer application programs. Strong ability to generate various reports. Proficiency Microsoft software applications (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Google Suite, Visio) or equivalent web-based tools.

  • Highly skilled communication and interpersonal skills to communicate with and influence others, both verbally and in writing.

  • Capable and extensive experience in the planning and management of projects and programs. High level of diplomacy. Ability to bring a sense of professional urgency, appropriate follow-up and accountability to role. Excellent judgment, tact and ability to work well with internal and external partners. Proven ability to determine and address potential barriers.

  • Thorough knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures and external regulatory requirements in policy domain. In-depth experience in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing new initiatives and programs, including policy development.

  • Expert knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques. Extensive skills in systems-thinking and policy analysis. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Proven ability to make recommendations and take actions based on understanding and judgment of all factors involved.

  • Excellent analytical / problem-solving skills. Extensive skills in short- and long-term strategic planning, analysis, problem-solving and customer service. Expertise to research, collect, process, interpret, and accurately and effectively present a variety of data. Strong abilities in conducting relevant and historical analyses techniques and developing summarized reports. Skills in conflict management, resource and time management.

  • Strong experience and creativity in developing and implementing cutting edge best-in-class education modalities and systems. Experience with increasing online learner engagement and continuous improvement of online student experiences.

  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and execution.

  • Proven ability to deliver well thought-out presentations that are persuasive, informative, and effectual to all audiences using current technology, speaking extemporaneously on a wide variety of job-related subjects to express ideas, thoughts, and opinions.

  • Ability to work independently and make independent decisions. Strong ability in procedural and policy analysis. Experience establishing and accomplishing short- and long- term goals and objectives.

  • Experience with budget management and strong leadership skills to lead various workgroups and committees.

  • Experience and skill to routinely monitor production and quality of work being produced by staff and set performance standards, observing behavior, providing objective feedback, counseling, and implementing corrective action as needed to mediate disputes or otherwise help to resolve conflicts and to provide effective leadership/coaching/mentoring.

  • Ability to delegate and coordinate complex tasks with attention to both overall goals and specific details. Skill in applying organizational development, team building, problem solving, and conflict resolution techniques in group situations.

  • Ability to communicate, engage and develop rapport with individuals of diverse cultural, social, and religious backgrounds, and varied age, gender, and sexual orientation. Must be able to demonstrate respect and integrate cultural sensitivity.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work evenings or alternate schedules, as workload requires.

  • Must be able to travel for professional conferences.

  • Job offer is contingent on clear Background Check; ARO designation requires recurring background checks every four (4) years.
