The Division of Extended Studies (DES) at UC San Diego is fully self-supporting, operating year-round (12 months of active instruction) with a budget of $47 million annually in primarily fee income. The unit has over 200 career employees, including academic, management, staff and executive, and represented and non-represented positions. Many casual or contract employees and student workers also serve in the organization. In addition, DES employs more than 1,000 active by-agreement instructors.
DES operates in 200,000 square feet of managed space, including a large off-campus classroom facility. The unit maintains a robust online learning platform, operating 24/7 with webcasting and video-conferencing capability. DES also has a strong web presence with e-commerce operating 24/7. Over 60,000 enrollment transactions annually, 35,000 outreach certification transactions, and 25,000 service transactions. DES supports a robust network of representatives, agents, and students (both residential and online) around the globe. Along with all this, DES operates two television stations and various public lecture programs. It is active in federal, state, local, and private research and technical assistance programs and activities.
As of Fall 2020, the University has assumed ownership of a major downtown center for which DES is taking full financial and programming responsibility. The 66,000-square-foot building will support a rich mix of campus-based and community programs reflecting the teaching, research, and public service mission of UC San Diego: classroom instruction, continuing education, arts, and cultural performances, civic events, and collaborative community projects.
The Director of Marketing and Communications is a senior marketing and strategy leader for DES and uses advanced marketing and communications concepts to create, develop, implement, and manage comprehensive promotional, marketing, and sales strategy plans, including short and long-range strategic planning. Serves as key marketing advisor and business catalyst to the Division of Extended Studies (DES) management. Collaborates with DES leadership to develop and refine DES' overall market branding and communications. Manages DES' major traditional and electronic marketing, web sites, and social media presence. Performs advanced target marketing. Identifies and cultivates new markets for professional continuing education programs aligned with the priorities and unique assets of a major research university. Identifies and recommends new technologies to enhance DES marketing reach and efficiency. Evaluates market needs and trends to make recommendations for new educational areas of opportunity to promote the division's growth and serve the community.
Responsibilities include comprehensive promotion and advertising activities. Projects and programs are typically complex and require a high degree of technical marketing expertise. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Receives strategic objectives from DES leadership and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and strategic goals. Manages comprehensive marketing and communications activities for DES, including management of human, financial and physical resources. Provides guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with established policies and is a critical extension of the brand for university leadership.

Strong skill in managing staff including selection, training, evaluating and mentoring staff at all organizational levels; skill in taking corrective action with staff as required. Demonstrated strong suite of management skills including organization, financial problem solving, negotiation, decision making, research and analysis, interpersonal skills, ang managing through subordinate supervisors.
Demonstrated experience developing a brand identity tailored to match an organization's vision, mission, strengths with market opportunities, communicating branding expectations to organization, and creating policies for branding implementation.
Strong knowledge of current and emerging industry requirements and best practices in areas of marketing. Demonstrated knowledge of print, electronic, and social media marketing including the design, editing, layout and production of printed and electronic publications. Demonstrated knowledge of graphic design, digital imaging management, print production process, direct mail, Demonstrated experience effectively using major social media sites to promote brand and engage with existing and potential customers.
Demonstrated excellent skills to develop and implement comprehensive, proactive communications strategies that support institutional goals, events, and major programs
Strong market research, analytical, and problem recognition / avoidance / resolution skills. Demonstrated experience identifying, evaluating, and pursuing target markets and partnerships for products/programs as well as experience evaluating effectiveness of targeted marketing efforts and partnerships.
Demonstrated strong client and customer service oversight experience including drafting/implementing policies, setting standards, and coaching staff on effective communication and customer service for both internal and external clients.
Strong knowledge of the campus / health system, including its mission, vision, achievements, infrastructure, products and services.
Strong interpersonal communication and political acumen to effectively work with internal customers and external constituencies.
Strong skills in strategic planning to effectively organize resources, establish priorities, and achieve desired results.
Strong skills to produce results and achieve predetermined goals within budget and time constraints.
Strong knowledge of applicable University policies and state and federal laws regarding copyright and other licensing issues.
Demonstrated strong copywriting, editing, and proofing skills along with a strong command of English language grammar and syntax to ensure effective and accurate messaging.
Demonstrated experience and success in promotional marketing to include the development of community and business outreach and the creation of promotional campaigns.
Experience developing, managing and maintaining a budget and experience in resource management.
Extensive experience working with media such as print, radio, and online/web-based communications outlets; proven ability to pro-actively place stories with national and/or international media.
Demonstrated strong project management experience to assign tasks and deadlines, ensure projects are on schedule and within budget, and completed to applicable standards.
