DESCRIPTION
UC San Diego Health Sciences encompasses UC San Diego Health, the region's only academic health system, UC San Diego School of Medicine, one of the nation's top research-intensive medical schools, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Southern California's first public school of pharmacy, and Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science. The Health Sciences Disability Services Director serves as the expert for School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences for increasing access for and improving retention of students with permanent and temporary disabilities. Under the general direction of the Director of the Office for Students with Disabilities, the Disability Services Director will coordinate the provision of services for students enrolled in the MD and PharmD programs who have a qualified disability and require access to programs and services.
Reporting to the Chief of Staff to the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, with a dotted-line to the Director of the Office for Students with Disabilities, the Health Sciences Disability Services Director serves as the primary contact for prospective and newly admitted students, reviews highly sensitive and confidential disability documentation, determines reasonable accommodations, and provides ongoing disability management support. The Director assesses and determines the nature and extent of a wide variety of disabilities, needed accommodations, and required support services, making decisions related to a wide range of accommodation issues related to the specific needs of the learners in Health Sciences.
The Director consults with faculty and administrators in Medicine and Pharmacy regarding student needs and disability-related curricular accommodations; interprets federal and state laws and regulations to students and faculty; facilitates projects that support the delivery of high-quality services for Health Sciences students; and coordinates with the Office for Students with Disabilities to organize and/or participate in programs to raise awareness of disability issues and empower students with disabilities to achieve academic and personal success. Decisions made by the Director impacts university compliance and liability under federal and state disability law and regulations. The incumbent will escalate complex issues to the relevant Dean, Vice Chancellor, or campus office, as appropriate. Because of the sensitive nature of this position, the Director must have a deep commitment to ethical and equitable business practices and advocate for a more diverse and inclusive learning environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Five (5+) or more years of relevant experience.
Working knowledge of medical terminology and medical reports and their respective implications for reasonable accommodation and placement.
Strong writing, speaking, and group presentation skills in order to present information in a clear and concise manner to multiple levels in the organization in a professional manner.
Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative, originality, and judgment in applying established principles to new and unusual problems.
Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment and communicate professionally and courteously verbally, and in written form.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Advanced knowledge of procedures for assessing and determining disability accommodation issues, including the Disability Compliance Office procedures.
- Advanced knowledge of the legal framework involving accommodations for students with disabilities through state and federal laws and regulations.
- Skill to communicate with instructors and other organizational entities regarding a student's accommodations and other academic needs.
- Advanced knowledge of assessment, accommodation, and intervention techniques involved in employee's specialty, for example, learning disorders, mobility disability, visual impairment, etc. Specifically focused on meeting the unique needs of the Health Sciences' learner community.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $59,700 - $124,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $28.59 - $59.53
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).
If applicable, life-support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands-on practice and in-person skills assessment; online-only certification is not acceptable.
