The Research Development Unit (RDU) of the UC San Diego Research Service Core (RSC) oversees complex campus-wide or multi-disciplinary research funding opportunities and directs the preparation of complex research proposals. The RDU provides services to faculty within VCHS that includes the identification of funding resources, outreach to federal and not-for-profit funding agencies regarding future opportunities and management of a professional team responsible for the preparation of large interdisciplinary proposals or complex funding opportunities; research team building; identification of funding opportunities and targeted dissemination; and outreach and training activities designed to support extramural research funding opportunities .
Reporting to the Director Research Service Core, with direction from the Vice Chancellor for Translational Medicine, the Unit will coordinate with UCSD leadership and effective collaboration with faculty and the Vice Chancellor for Research, Deans and other important stakeholders.
Provides analysis and makes independent contributions for planning and development to support the Research Service Core projects. Focuses efforts on VCHS Research Service Core and partner Departments. Responsible for assisting in policy and program planning, managing and executing a variety of high level transactions, and maintaining efficient access for the Research Service Core. This will involve systems developed specifically to manage research fund management and data systems in the Health Sciences. Provides data management, analysis, project management, audit and compliance support. Reviews and assures integrity of data from general ledger and accurate PI/fund manager assignment - essential to fund management. This includes evaluation of ledger / index completion for new RSC work and placement of new accounts in appropriate project codes. Creates performance management reports on business functions and analyzes trends. Plans and implements enhanced methods and techniques for data management and data dissemination. Manages information in internal databases ensuring data integrity, consistency, and effectiveness. Responds to data requests via understanding and utilization of various UCSD systems (i.e. OCAA iShare Tracker, Velos, COEUS, HRPP, Assess Link, C&G Link, Data Warehouse, Excel, Access, Paradox, EPIC, etc.). Serves also as Research Service Core department DSA; a complex function requiring greater knowledge and skill as the access crosses multiple departmental areas of the VCHS, critical to efficient fund management with accurate and timely fiscal data.
Six (6) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two (2) years of related experience/training.
Demonstrates ability to analyze, research and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail.
Strong proficiency in Data Reporting and Analytics; specifically, experience using Tableau (Cognos experience a plus) to create reports from blended data sources.
Proficiency in writing complex formulas in Tableau and ability to reconcile data to source systems.
Proficient in creating ServiceNow forms and workflows.
Experience with data analytics, report creation and source system data validation.
Ability to create instructions for multiple report consumers outlining how to trace reporting data back to source system.
