DESCRIPTION

Recreation is an integral part of UC San Diego, striving to achieve the same standards of excellence that exist within the university’s academic programs. Recreation programs serve more students than any other co-curricular program at UC San Diego and based on annual surveys, are a key component of student satisfaction with their overall UC San Diego experience. Providing a broad scope of high-quality, dynamic recreational experiences that benefit students, staff, faculty, and the University community and supporting a culture of Wellness at UC San Diego, major programs include Intramural Sports; Sports Clubs; Recreation Instructional Classes and camps; Special Events and Outdoor Education. Recreation manages all indoor and outdoor sports facilities on the UC San Diego campus which include RIMAC, Main Gym, Canyonview Aquatic Center, Spanos, and all multi-purpose playing fields. Working in close conjunction with Intercollegiate Athletics, student and staff organizations, and the community.

Recreation provides maintenance, scheduling, retail, and support services for special events that improve the quality of life on campus. Recreation has an annual operating budget in excess of $17.5 million from various fund sources and employs 74 full-time staff, over 600 students, and 500 by-agreement instructors. Full-time staff are both non-represented and represented employees who span seven different union agreements.

Reporting to the Recreation Facilities Superintendent, supervise and coordinate the work assignments and duties of Custodial and student personnel for Recreation department facilities, which include the 5,000-seat RIMAC Arena, RIMAC Annex, RIMAC Field, Spanos Athletic Performance Center, Outback Adventures, Canyonview Aquatic Center, Triton Ballpark & Warren field. Guide crew members in proper cleaning and maintenance techniques and use of equipment and supplies. Distribute materials and equipment to be used for work assignments. Conduct regular building inspections of assigned crews to ensure quality and completion of work. Work closely with the Facilities Maintenance Manager on assigned special cleaning projects or to resolve service problems and initiate maintenance work orders as needed.

The Custodial Supervisor supervises four (4) custodial workers (SX staff) while ensuring assignments are completed on time using established guidelines, procedures, and policies. May provide work direction to other departmental custodial staff.

The position will support the building operations by locking/unlocking as needed and performing building checks to ensure the safety and well-being of patrons and staff. Additionally, the position will support the event operations team by performing room inspections to ensure event setups are correct and the rooms are clean and presentable. May meet with event clients to provide on-site support.

May provide backup to staff as required. Performs skilled cleaning, housekeeping, and/or general maintenance and set-up duties within RIMAC and other Recreation facilities, as needed.

  • Must be willing and able to provide custodial services in the absence of staff due to vacation, illness, etc.

  • The regular work schedule is 40 hours per week, Wed-Sun 3:30 p.m. - 12:00 a.m. (Swing Shift). Must work occasional flexible, variable hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience scheduling, training, and supervising custodial work. Ability to guide, train and instruct employees. Progressive professional custodial supervisory experience. Experience supervising in a large academic, hospital or commercial setting. Experience supervising in a union environment.

  • Working knowledge in custodial and housekeeping services. Includes extensive knowledge of the proper use and storage of cleaning chemicals, floor finishes, wall coverings and finishes, and carpet cleaning systems & equipment.

  • Familiar with a wide variety of custodial equipment, including high pressure washers, high speed burnishers, carpet extractors and steam machines. Ability to evaluate custodial equipment and tools to ensure proper function and ability to perform minor preventive maintenance as necessary.

  • Comprehensive experience cleaning and maintaining a large multipurpose facility; experience ordering supplies, maintaining custodial inventory, issuing radios and building keys, and securing facilities.

  • Basic computer application skills. Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) and web browsing skills.

  • Working knowledge and skill in effective interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel.

  • Working knowledge of and ability for decision making, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, and perform operations analysis, and quality control analysis. Ability to establish priorities and solve operational problems

  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff, including but not limited to training and assigning work, evaluating employee performance, recommending new hires, promotions, reclassifications, and disciplinary actions.

  • Thorough knowledge and ability to create and follow performance standards with regard to workloads, quality, safety and service.

  • Verbal and written communication skills in the English language, active listening, flexibility, critical thinking, multi-tasking, and time management.

  • Ability to understand, interpret, explain and enforce departmental and UCSD policies and procedures.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • The job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Must have a valid California driver's license to operate a University vehicle, as needed.

  • Must have CPR/First Aid certification or acquire such certification within six (6) months of employment.
