The UC San Diego Cryo-EM Facility, administered by the School of Biological Sciences, is a cross-campus facility serving researchers from several academic units, including Physical Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Scripps Oceanographic Institution, Health Sciences, and the Skaggs School of Pharmacy. The facility houses state-of-the art microscopes - a Titan Krios G3 with K3 direct electron detector, BioContinuum energy filter, and STEM and EELS capabilities; a Titan Krios G4 with Falcon 4 detector and Selectors X energy filter, and a Talos Arctica with Falcon 4i detector and Volta phase plates - as well as all the necessary ancillary equipment, including a Tecnai Sphera TEM for screening.

The incumbent will provide technical support for the UCSD Cryo-EM Facility during a period of substantial expansion of the user base as well as hardware and instrumentation resources. They will work directly with the Facility Director and lab staff to efficiently manage multiple instruments, users, and projects (including fee-for-service data collection for external users). Particular emphasis will be placed on training and supervision of users in all aspects of the use of microscopy equipment, sample-preparation and Cryo-EM data collection methods including single-particle and tomography.

Incumbent will be responsible for working with users to analyze Cryo-EM data samples to determine the quality and make recommendations to users in their protocols. Will manage database of research data for projects. An ability to analyze data collected and keep informed of new developments and techniques in Cryo-EM is a must. The position will offer the opportunity for scientific collaboration with research projects of facility users through project management, developing and implementing efficient strategies for sample preparation and data collection, and advising on data processing strategies.

Critical to the position will be the ongoing development and implementation of new methods in sample preparation and imaging for Cryo-EM and interfacing with users to help develop and implement workflows that can lead to high resolution structure determination. Perform other duties as assigned. Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced research professional with a full understanding of in-depth statistical analyses and / or research software programming techniques. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.


  • Theoretical knowledge of and background in materials science, biochemistry, or biological sciences acquired through formal education at the collegiate level and/or comparable laboratory experience. PhD preferred.

  • Thorough knowledge of research function. Demonstrated knowledge, experience, and skills in successfully conducting independent research in the general areas of virology, molecular biology, biochemistry, molecular biophysics, or cell biology.

  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to calibrate communication to the appropriate level of the user’s technical understanding. Skill at clearly and concisely communicating detailed information over the phone, in writing, and in person. Ability to communicate well with groups or individuals in both formal and informal settings.

  • Skills in project management.

  • Ability and experience in preparing and contributing content for reports and grants, oral presentations at group and other meetings and workshops, and writing outlines and rough and final drafts of manuscripts (including high quality illustrations) to report the results of research projects in top tier journals.

  • Proven ability to independently organize time handling complex tasks and sophisticated equipment. Pay meticulous attention to detail, keep accurate records, and effectively communicate verbally and in writing with lab members, vendors and collaborators.

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in training and providing direction to other lab personnel and other researchers.

  • General understanding and recognition of UCSD policies and procedures and lab safety procedures.

  • Knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.

  • Skill to operate a personal computer and demonstrated knowledge of databases, general computer applications, and programs including word processing and spreadsheets. Willingness and ability to update and increase computer skills and knowledge as needed.

  • Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis and systems programming. Advanced skills associated with analysis and database management. Ability to analyze data collected and keep informed of new developments and techniques in sample preparation for Cryo-EM processes.

  • Thorough skills in analysis and consultation. Ability to analyze the interrelationships of data and define logical aspects of data sets. Demonstrated ability to develop systems for organizing data to analyze, identify and report trends.

  • Research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations. Advanced research skills at a level to evaluate and analyze cryo-EM data and use data analysis to determine qualify of specimens and data. Ability to recommend to users any modifications to their protocols.

  • Knowledge of and skill in performing low-dose imaging with a transmission electron microscopeequipped with a field emission gun, an electron energy filter, and a direct electron detection device, and using quick-freezing devices and vacuum evaporators.

  • Knowledge of the theory and techniques for the preparation of biological macromolecules for TEM and cryo-TEM including grid preparation, sample preparation, negative staining, metal shadowing, plunge-freezing, and microscope alignments.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of current literature regarding cryo-TEM, 3D reconstruction, and the structural biology of macromolecules.


  • Must be willing to be available to other users on site, via telephone and email and vary work schedule to accommodate research needs.

  • Must be willing to come on site when problems arise that require immediate attention.

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
