DESCRIPTION

This role is focused on the design, development, modification, and evaluation of complex high-performance computing (HPC), computational science, and data science software systems. The candidate will work on both existing and new software, hardware, and algorithms, performing tasks such as debugging, performance testing, and optimization. They will also collaborate with domain scientists to adapt computational models to emerging technologies and paradigms, ensuring accurate results, and contributing to the development of integrated modeling frameworks. In addition, the role involves assembling, configuring, and maintaining scientific models in areas like computational physics and engineering.

The candidate will also participate in research and development activities, contributing to proposals and establishing collaborations with researchers from related fields. They will benchmark and analyze HPC systems and algorithms, create and maintain technical documentation, and present findings at conferences and in publications. The position may require leading projects of moderate scope, interacting with internal stakeholders, and supporting Department of Energy Fusion Energy Science (DOE FES) initiatives. Negotiates project plans, trains others on software usage, and ensures compliance with community standards and department policies.

This position may be eligible for a flexible work arrangement, which could include a non-standard work schedule, and/or the ability to work off-site part of the time. The employee shall be available full-time during assigned work hours (specific hours to be discussed with supervisor). This position may also work remotely, requiring a remote work agreement, anywhere in the United States.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer / Computational / Data Science, or Domain Sciences with computer / computational / data specialization or equivalent experience.

  • Intermediate knowledge of HPC / data science / CI. Working experience on submitting, canceling, updating jobs on HPC resources. Experience on automating processes and reporting.

  • Advanced skills, and demonstrated experience associated with one or more of the following: HPC hardware and software power and performance analysis and research, design, modification, Implementation and deployment of HPC or data science or CI applications and tools. Proficiency in both Julia and Python programming languages, as well as revision control tools such as git and GitHub.

  • Demonstrated ability to regularly interface with management. Demonstrated experience in attending and participating in meetings with PI's and other research collaborators.

  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization and to external research and education audiences. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to draft manuscript for publication and edit existing manuscripts.

  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines involving grant, conference, and paper submission deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute research and technical content to grant proposals.

  • Demonstrated experience and ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of staff; technical, students, faculty and administrators

  • Proven ability to successfully work on multiple concurrent projects. Demonstrated ability to perform well under pressure and handle multiple tasks.

  • Demonstrated broad experience in one or more of the following: optimizing, benchmarking, HPC performance and power modeling, analyzing hardware, software, and applications for HPC / data / CI. Experience performing large-scale optimization and statistical model validations. Knowledge of large-scale data processing and integration.

  • Proven skills and experience in independently resolving broad computing / data / CI problems using introductory and / or intermediate principles.

  • Thorough experience working in a complex computing / data / CI environment encompassing all or some of the following: HPC, data science infrastructure and tools / software, and diverse domain science application base.

  • Proven ability to understand research computing / data / CI needs, mapping use cases to requirements and how systems / software / infrastructure can support those needs and meet the requirements. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement such solutions.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $85,400 - $156,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $40.90 - $75.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
