DESCRIPTION
The Departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) and Structural Engineering (SE) are in the Irwin and Joan Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California- San Diego (UCSD).
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is a large interdisciplinary engineering department that provides an exciting and inclusive environment that promotes discovery and excellence in a wide range of engineering, scientific, entrepreneurial and professional areas. https://mae.ucsd.edu/
Structural Engineering Department Mission: To advance the structural engineering profession through research, teaching and service by integrating engineering mechanics theories, computational modeling simulations, experimental testing observations, and practical design concepts.http://structures.ucsd.edu
This position supports the departments of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering and Structural Engineering in the Jacob Schools of Engineering Division. Incumbent will serve as an important new component of the comprehensive communications program for both departments with moderately complex communications requirements. In this context, the incumbent will oversee department-focused communications programs with a particular focus on building community, and raising awareness of the strengths of the two departments with their respective target audiences, including: department alumni, industry partners, donors, and friends of each department; prospective students and faculty; senior faculty at peer departments across the nation; current students, staff and faculty. Social media content generation; social media planning and management; email newsletters; print publications and marketing; and profile writing of alumni, faculty, students and staff are core components of the job.
Works with management from both departments, and with the Jacobs School of Engineering communications team, to develop and execute organizational communication and market branding strategy. Design and implement information campaigns.
Uses the latest social media tools and best practices to identify and implement opportunities for the departments' social media and department-focused email and print outreach and marketing programs. Initiates, implements and manages the departments' social media strategy, coordinating with the Jacobs School of Engineering Division and UC San Diego to ensure its effectiveness and uniformity with campus culture, messaging, branding, and outreach efforts and services.
Develops and manages creative social media campaigns and marketing messaging. Works with department management team, in conjunction with the Jacobs School of Engineering communications team, to create and distribute the messaging for specific events, periodic and regular news updates, initiatives and other efforts.
Creates original profiles, articles, web and other contents/projects. Identifies, proposes and develops strategic communications tactics and marketing approaches for departments initiatives. Serves as creator and editor of alumni and departmental-community newsletters.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of three (3) years experience creating social media strategies to market to sophisticated target audiences. Experience researching target audiences and creating and implementing a variety of media to reach an audience, ideally for a university program. Ability to provide sound, professional social media communications strategy in a campus environment.
Minimum of three (3) years experience creating and writing content for social media pieces. Strong experience with the hands on skills related to posting content, images, and videos on social networking platforms while tailoring messages to specific audiences, ideally for a university program or educational product. Experience writing and editing effective press releases, advertising copy, radio/television copy, and website content.
Experience with creating quality, compelling social media content to help generate visibility for the department's brand, reputation, initiatives and events.
Experience working in a goal-driven, fast-paced environment. Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously; experience setting and shifting priorities based on goals, timeframe, resources. Ability to make timely decisions in fast-paced environment and react with appropriate urgency to situations and events that require quick response or turnaround.
Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications. Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of design and user experience.
Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.
Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences.
Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
Knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with other campus social media network administrators and communications colleagues.
Demonstrated aptitude to learn a wide variety of software program including but not limited to Google Apps, Microsoft Office Suite, Internet browsers and media relations and social media software/monitoring services. Demonstrated innovation, creativity and a track record of keeping current with new technologies and new approaches. Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and / or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
Experience quantifying effectiveness of social media strategies; experience evaluating and advising on effectiveness of social media strategies. Knowledge of the practices for effecting marketing communications and branding promotions to support branding messages.
Demonstrated ability to handle assignments in a confidential manner exercising diplomacy and mature judgment; awareness of ongoing and future projects affecting schedules, work flow, etc. and make decisions regarding work priorities.
Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and bring projects to completion within given deadlines, exercising initiative and appropriate follow-up techniques. Work as part of a team; produce top quality work under time constraints.
Demonstrated ability to use journalistic style to write interesting, accurate and comprehensive news and feature articles. Demonstrated experience in writing for the web, eMarketing activities, and utilizing electronic communications tools.
Experience monitoring news sources to post on social media sites. Experience summarizing news articles and up-to-the-minute news reports for use on social media. Ability to think creatively to identify topics for use on various social media platforms; experience altering content based on social media platform.
Demonstrated ability to perform project management including: planning, organizing, leading and controlling aspects for successful project completion. Ability to meet established project deadlines.
Demonstrated skill to research, analyze and evaluate data, make decisions, solve problems and initiate actions. Experience in creating, analyzing and summarizing instructions and procedures. Demonstrated ability to interpret instructions and established practices, when applicable.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $59,700 - $124,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $28.59 - $59.53
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
