The Student Health and Well-being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego Health System plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture at UC San Diego that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the expansion/development of a student health and well-being center, and the transformation of existing departments under the oversight of the Executive Director into a cohesive, multi-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Wellness Administration (SWA), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Health Promotion Services (HPS) and Student Health Services (SHS). Clinical and mental health, and health education services are provided to over 42,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students.
This position coordinates analytical support for SHW clinical and business operations along with quality initiatives, including business analytics/performance metrics. Defines systems and applications to support various functions. Provides customer service, troubleshooting and maintenance to report users.
Independently acquires and applies additional skills and knowledge of professional concepts in clinical informatics to complex projects. Obtains training necessary to query data from the Epic report databases, namely Clarity and Cabooble. May perform queries of this database for research studies as well. Analytic development will focus on Epic data, Student Enrollment and UCSD financial systems requiring merging of datasets. Performs advanced statistical analysis, prepares graphs/charts, writes reports, participates in preparation of various reports and presentations. Scope includes real-time reporting within Epic, SQL programming and visualization layer leveraging Tableau and other tools.
Involves the development and implementation of the organization's information systems and tools that are applied to clinical information. Works closely with clinicians across the SHW departments to optimize effective use of systems. Coordinates analytical support for health management, including profiling, health economics, and business analytics / performance metrics. Defines systems and applications to support various functions. Applies skills and experience as a seasoned clinical informatics professional to projects of medium size at all levels of complexity, or portions of large projects.
Works with business, technical, and clinical personnel to develop and implement complex clinical informatics solutions and to create integrated architecture to ensure optimal use of tools and components. Collaborates closely with business operations, healthcare clinicians, and IT applications and technical teams to translate operations workflow and patient experience objectives into technical requirements. Works on project teams that include business and clinical staff to improve clinical informatics planning and systems and to develop metrics and analytics that support health management in making decisions for upgrades and modifications that are cost-effective, scalable, and meet present and future needs.
Performs quality assurance testing of complex scope, runs SQL (Structured Query Language) queries for enhanced medical data access, and writes and maintains appropriate documentation of design and deployment processes, workflows, and results. As necessary, provides support, troubleshooting, problem solving, and instruction for clinical informatics users and participates in curriculum development for user training. Other duties as assigned.
Seven (7) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus three (3) years of related experience/training.
Will be required to be certified in assigned EMR vendor's product/module within the first six (6) months of employment.
Must satisfy all vendor testing requirements to be certified without needing to attend vendors training a second time for the same class.
Broad and / or in-depth knowledge of 1-2 areas of focus in business and clinical informatics specialty areas. Knowledge of controlled terminology, clinical workflows, user interface optimization, clinical decision support, rules development, data integration and mining, clinical ontologies and adoption of technology.
Thorough knowledge of all relevant clinical informatics software and technology, and the complex concepts, principles, policies, methodologies, and industry standards and practices involved with patient care and electronic medical data management in the UC health care system.
Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate productively, work in a team environment, and to train and support business and clinical informatics users at all professional and technical levels throughout the campus and medical center.
Strong problem-resolution skills, with the ability to quickly diagnose problems, and develop, test, and implement appropriate and effective solutions in a timely manner.
Ability to work with senior staff and managers in clinical information technology, health care management, and business analytics, serving as a technical resource and providing advice and counsel on issues of functionality, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, policy, and performance.
Professional level experience working with business and clinical information systems and developing reports.
Intermediate level capabilities with MS Access and MSSQL server and related technologies.
Knowledge and intermediate level experience working with T-SQL or other equivalent SQL database query language and tools, and reporting tools such as Crystal Reports, Business Objects WebIntelligence, Tableau, Cognos, SAS, Oracle and other related tools.
Experience in a large, complex healthcare environment.
- EPIC Certifications in Clarity, Radar, Reporting Workbench or other Epic applications.

- Occasional travel may be required.
- Ability to telecommute for work, if/when needed and operationally feasible, as determined by department.
