An integral leader within UC San Diego Health’s Information Services department, the Chief Nursing Informatics Officer (CNIO) will provide clinical and informatics leadership for inpatient and ambulatory nursing care across UC San Diego Health. They will lead nursing in the design and execution of technology-enabled process change that maximizes patient safety, quality of care, and operational efficiency. They will assist with the identification, evaluation, and assessment of new nursing and all clinical care delivery technology, developing recommendations on the impact of integration with existing workflows and systems.

The CNIO recruits, motivates, and supervises our nursing informatics team. They will oversee nursing and allied health professional super users as they participate in the ongoing optimization and maintenance of the Epic EHR at UC San Diego Health and all related clinical information systems. They will collaborate closely with Nursing Education, Development and Research, the EHR Inpatient and Ambulatory Care Teams, the EHR Clinical Training Team, and other leaders throughout nursing and the organization. This role will report through Information Services, but will be integrated into daily operations within nursing and the Nurse Executive Team.

Key Responsibilities

* Work across the nursing, other clinical, and administrative leadership of the health system and its partners to achieve quality, safety, and value in nursing care as enabled by technology.

* Participate in strategic planning with our EHR Vendor, IS and Nursing strategic planning. Serve as an integral participant in the strategic planning for nursing care and resources across the enterprise.

* Monitor developments and trends in IS technology advancements with a focus on clinical and training and interpret them considering UC San Diego Health nursing and ancillary needs and strategic direction.

* Represent the nursing community and serve as a leadership advocate in promoting the effective, efficient, and sustainable use of information technology in nursing practice.

* Leads nursing in the design and execution of technology-enabled process change that maximizes patient safety, quality of care, and operational efficiency.

* Assists with the identification, evaluation, and assessment of new nursing care delivery technology, developing recommendations on the impact of integration with existing workflows and systems.

* Serve as an integral participant in the strategic planning for nursing care and resources across the enterprise.

* Lead or participate in various projects requested by or impacting nursing and other clinical areas in collaboration with business partners.

* Provide complex clinical and institutional problem-solving.

* Negotiate solutions across constituencies that balance competing priorities.

* Promote and maintain outstanding interpersonal relationships, as well as proficiency in consensus building, conflict resolution, and group interaction.

* Partner with other UC Health peers in the CMIO/CNIO Leverage Scale for Value committee on various initiatives and projects impacting all the UC’s.


  • A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and eight or more years of relevant experience, including progressive leadership experience, ideally within a large integrated health system and/or academic medical center.

  • Four or more years in Nursing Informatics or Health IT roles.

  • Current, or eligibility to obtain, California RN license, with ongoing employment contingent on valid CA RN licensure.

  • Certification in Nursing Informatics or Nursing Administration, or a willingness to pursue and obtain Nursing Informatics certification in the first year of employment.

  • Experience and proven success in clinical applications concepts, policies, and practices, including planning, design, development, testing, integrations of software and systems, programming, and training and support methodologies.

  • A deep knowledge of the electronic health record in nursing, and a vision for its enhancement and optimization.

  • Outstanding technical skills, analytical ability, judgment, and operational focus.

  • Strong leadership ability in a complex, matrixed academic health delivery environment. Ability to build relationships, including support for aligned planning and governance processes.

  • Outstanding communication skills across clinical, technical, and executive audiences. Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to work collaboratively with diverse personalities.

  • High regard as an informaticist and expert resource to the health system business, finance, and IT leadership.

  • Perseverance in the setting of complex problems and the implementation of solutions with long timelines.

  • Understanding of regional and national health care trends and the implications for nursing informatics.

  • Excellent skill and experience in negotiation and conflict resolution. Ability to listen and respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints.


  • Advanced Degree in Nursing administration, IS or relevant field of study.

  • Graduate or Fellowship training in nursing informatics.

  • Nurse IS leadership of at least one prior EHR implementation or major EHR enhancements in a complex academic medical center environment.


  • Must pass a background check.
  • Must pass physical and TB test.
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $99,600 - $274,000 Annually

The University of California, San Diego is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Expected Pay Scale. Placement within the Expected Pay Scale is determined by internal equity, relevant qualifications, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).

Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).
