Incumbent serves as the Buyer, Marine Science in Procurement & Contracts ---a unit of Integrated Procure-to-Pay Solutions (IPPS) housed within Business and Financial Services (BFS). This position manages Marine Science Supplies, SIO Lab Supplies, Minor Equipment and related commodities within the context of UCSD’s e-Procurement portal. Incumbent will serve as the transactional and supplier point of contact within assigned commodity/service areas, and is also responsible for adoption and implementation of strategically sourced agreements.
This position processes purchase transactions in the e-procurement system, directing requestors to appropriate University guidelines and policies as necessary. By utilizing their basic understanding of scientific principles, incumbent helps UCSD researchers solve practical problems involving the procurement of goods and services. Incumbent works closely with the Commodity Manager to monitor data from each of their commodity/service areas and contracted suppliers in order to understand purchase patterns from the end users and correct any catalog discrepancies. Performs spend analysis for department or organization on assigned vendors or commodities. Perform commodity analysis that includes spend data, campus requirements gathering, and an evaluation of the present state of the commodity. Using this data as a foundation, incumbent works with their suppliers to make adjustments in the catalog for the purpose of correcting pricing, enhancing product descriptions, or optimizing trends identified through the data.

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
Ability to read and interpret terms and conditions of basic contracts. Basic understanding of purchasing, business law concepts, accepted business practices, and the ability to learn and apply such knowledge under direction to prepare purchase orders and contracts conforming to the regulation requirements.
Working level of proficiency in the use of standard spreadsheet and word processing software. Proficient at MS Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Power Point.
Some knowledge of the organization's departments and operations required in order to meet their procurement needs. Basic understanding of procurement practices consistent with the policies and procures of the University equal opportunity in business contracting principles
Understands ERP / financial systems (such as Oracle, PeopleSoft, SAP, Banner, etc.).
Degree in Business Administration, Science, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience in procurement or business environment, preferably within higher education environment.
