DESCRIPTION
The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science is dedicated to creating and promoting public health innovations to advance equity, justice, and wellbeing for all and has more than 80 primary salaried faculty, 20 secondary faculty, 250+ personnel, 225 postgraduate students, and over 650 undergraduate majors. The School includes activities in the public health disciplines of biostatistics and bioinformatics, epidemiology, global health, health policy, health behavior, health equity, public mental health, environmental and climate health, and preventive medicine.
The School has strong collaborative research programs facilitated by Research Centers of Excellence focused on wireless and population health systems, health promotion and equity, women's health, and tobacco control, and has extensive collaborations with the School of Medicine, Jacobs School of Engineering, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Moores Cancer Center, Design Lab, Qualcomm Institute, ACTRI, HDSI, Skaggs School of Pharmacy, and with other partners across the UC San Diego campus. Partnerships with the community and health agencies are fundamental to the School.
The School houses five recharge cores providing services to UC San Diego and external customers. Research in the School includes ~$125M total awarded grants and contracts. The School has and administers two PhD programs (public health and biostatistics), a Master of Public Health professional degree program, a MS in Biostatistics, the only Health Sciences undergraduate program (BSPH), a Master of Applied Science in Leadership of Healthcare Organizations run in conjunction with UC San Diego Extension, and a Preventive Medicine Residency program.
The bilingual health educator (interventionist) will deliver a behavioral weight loss intervention focused on improving family functioning in Mexican-Americans. The interventionist will lead in-person weekly group based sessions in a research setting and monthly family sessions in a home setting. The interventionist will adhere to a treatment protocol consisting of nutrition and physical activity education, behavioral modification strategies, and relationship skills training.
Uses professional health education concepts. Applies campus policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues. Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Six (6) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus two (2) years of related experience/training.
Working knowledge of the health promotion and education field. Knowledge of cognitive and behavioral theories and related treatment models.
Skills associated with both the development and delivery of health education programs and services. Counseling skills in mental/behavioral health.
Effective interpersonal skills needed to work with a diverse client group.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish both verbally and in writing.
Ability to acquire the requisite skills to analyze, interpret and respond to client needs. Ability to review participant progress reports and provide constructive feedback and support.
Must have a valid CA driver's license and acceptable driving record.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Working knowledge of the design and delivery of related programs. Knowledge of intervention/treatment fidelity.
Skills in nutrition and/or physical activity counseling.
Skills in family counseling.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
Able to work some early evening hours and some weekend hours.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $48,900 - $102,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $23.42 - $48.99
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
