DESCRIPTION

The Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine was established in 1969 and since then has grown to have 40+ faculty members with research space located in several buildings on and off campus including the Clinical Teaching Facility (CTF), the Theodore Gildred Facility (TGF) , the Stein Clinical Research Building, the Moores Cancer Center, the Biomedical Research Facility, the San Diego VA Medical Center, the Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM) East Building, and the George Palade Laboratories for Cellular and Molecular Medicine. The department has major international collaborations in Mozambique, Mexico, India, South Africa and Peru that play important roles in the Division’s expansion of its international programs.

A large percent of the faculty and projects conduct their research at the Antiviral Research Center (AVRC) located across the street from UCSD Medical Center on the Hillcrest Campus. The AVRC is made up of a team of over 50 research coordinators, lab technicians, nurses, pharmacists, data associates, regulatory experts, community outreach representatives, business office staff, statisticians, and programmers to support over a dozen investigators. The AVRC is equipped to conduct Phase 1-4 clinical trials and has a diverse portfolio of over 40 projects funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and private industry.

As the AVRC Business Office Manager, the incumbent will work under the direction of the Director of Operations and the Medical Director to establish, implement, and evaluate the business office and its staff, coordinate human resources tasks together with the Director of Operations, and to support the AVRC with the implementation and management of clinical trials and grant-related projects.

The incumbent has broad discretionary responsibility for applying appropriate management techniques and executive-level judgment to provide leadership in defining the direction, goals and requirements of the business office and human resources needs. To accomplish this, the incumbent will work closely with the Principal Investigators at the AVRC, the AVRC leadership team, and the financial analysts within the Department of Medicine.

Due to the number of grants, principal investigators, and staff within the AVRC, a large portion of this position will focus on supporting the business office staff, tracking the labor distribution across the different projects, and facilitating communication between the financial analysts and the principal investigators to ensure grant funds are spent during the grant cycle.

Additionally, the incumbent will support the Director of Operations by assisting with updating job descriptions, human resources submissions, updating standard operating procedures, and providing leadership to all of the staff within the AVRC.

Administers all finance, human resources and facilities and other operational activities ranging from small to mid-sized to larger academic or research programs. Administers major program components, and some or all of the program's operational requirements. Develops and organizes conferences and other public forums. Works under direction of Principal Investigator or more senior Academic Program Officer to establish center agenda, funding, objectives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Nine (9) years of related experience, education and training, OR an bachelor's degree in related area plus five (5) years of related experience.

  • Academic background and experience in selected area of research preferred.

  • Thorough knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility. Ability to work successfully with a wide range of people with varying perspectives and needs. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Proven ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.

  • Demonstrated fundraising experience.

  • Thorough knowledge and experience with quantitative and qualitative research design; scientific research concepts and terminology.

  • Strong leadership skills and employee supervision associated with planning work assignments, training others and establishing priorities.

  • Experience interpreting/coordinating research protocols and the corresponding data requirements. Experience with human subjects research and Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes.

  • Thorough knowledge and ability to apply all relevant Federal, state, and university regulations, policies, and federal guidance documents.

  • Broad knowledge of all phases of clinical research, from study startup through closeout and primary publication and presentation. Knowledgeable about clinical studies involving complex trial design issues.

  • Broad knowledge of clinical research concepts, federal, state and local laws and regulations, and industry requirements regarding the proper conduct of clinical trials. Broad theoretical and operational knowledge of clinical and patient safety standards and regulations relating to clinical research.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field of study.
  • Experience and knowledge of protocol development and institutional review board (IRB) submission.
  • Experience managing others in a relevant setting.
