DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego and employs 486+ full-time salaried faculty members and 100+ academic appointees. Staff personnel include 600+ staff in 9 bargaining units, students, and volunteers. There are 250 clinical faculty practicing at multiple sites and hospitals.

The Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health (ID+GPH) within the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego aims to eliminate the burdens of infectious diseases and health disparities by delivering outstanding patient care, conducting world-class multidisciplinary health research, directing the institutional response to antimicrobial resistance, preventable healthcare associated infections, and emerging pathogens, and offering leadership, consultation and training on global public health, gender equity, microbiology, and infectious diseases topics

Reporting to the Director of Operations of the Antiviral Research Center (AVRC), the incumbent is a member of the leadership team for the research center, which makes decisions on staffing, research project selection and implementation, funding, strategic planning, and the overall operations of the AVRC. As a member, the incumbent will be responsible for monitoring the entire grant portfolio for the center, which includes large, complex interdisciplinary grants for over a dozen principal investigators (PI) that fund over 50 staff shared across projects.

To accomplish this, the incumbent manages a team of employees in the AVRC Business Office and collaborates with the Department of Medicine Sponsored Projects Office (SPO) and multiple other campus departments. Though not directly responsible for managing the sponsored funds, the incumbent and their team work closely with the AVRC investigators and fund managers within SPO to manage staff effort across projects and across PIs. The incumbent will directly supervise all AVRC business office staff which includes talent acquisition, onboarding, training, evaluating, coaching, and corrective action.

Fulfills independent responsibility for large, complex research grant programs/initiatives. Participates in short- and long-term strategic planning for grant-making, program evaluation, and research strategies. Provides guidance to less experienced team members.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree and seven years of related experience, OR an Advanced degree in related area plus five years of related experience.

  • In-depth academic background and experience in selected area of research including record of publications in related field(s) required.

  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills. Advanced skills analyzing information, problems, situations, policies or procedures to define the problem, need or objective.

  • Proven ability to formulate solutions, new program development, alternative choices and implications for implementation.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.

  • Advanced program planning and management of projects.

  • Demonstrated knowledge to navigate a highly matrixed organization effectively.

  • Skill in computer software applications including Microsoft Office and Excel. Knowledge of word processing and e-mail to produce reports, profiles, correspondence and spreadsheets to generate and track required data. Aptitude for learning new computers programs and software and specialized scientific equipment and procedures. Knowledge of scientific computing systems including processors, storage and other relevant research infrastructure.

  • Expert knowledge and experience in managing small and large projects.

  • Expert knowledge and experience of sponsored and non-sponsored projects.

Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $71,000 - $160,000 Annually

The University of California, San Diego is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Expected Pay Scale. Placement within the Expected Pay Scale is determined by internal equity, relevant qualifications, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
