This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at Moores Cancer Center and remote.

The Moores Cancer Center is one of just 51 in the United States to hold a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. As such, it ranks among the top centers in the nation conducting basic and clinical cancer research, providing advanced patient care and serving the community through outreach and education programs.

The Cancer Center's mission is to translate promising scientific discoveries into new and better options for the care of patients with cancer. The Center supports one of the broadest ranges of cancer activities in the nation - from fundamental and translational cancer research in molecular genetics and advanced molecular therapeutics, and from population studies of cancer incidence to community education about cancer prevention and risk reduction.

The Assistant Financial Analyst is responsible for supporting the transactional level responsibilities and analysis of the sponsored projects within the Moores Cancer Center (MCC) portfolio. This position will have a high level of transactions they are responsible for, both in executing and organizing. Serve as a financial support person for all the Fund Managers within the MCC; receives additional work direction from the Assistant Director of Research Finance.

The Assistant Financial Analyst is responsible for serving MCC with various financial issues and topics of differing complexity: performs direct retros, funding changes and other transactions; performs financial and operational transactional roles within the Department, including approval of employee reimbursement and other expense transactions, and review of samples from department transaction sampling plan; completes projects accepted from a diverse range of personnel; acts as a positive and contributing team player with strong professional commitment; acts in a professional capacity, applying skills to support evaluation of significant business needs/problems; supports the research, analysis, and evaluation of financial and operational proposals and relevant policies, procedures, and regulations; and responds to requests by converting financial data to actionable information to provide forecasts and recommendations.


  • Four (4) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, business/data analytics, mathematics, statistics, or related area.

  • Ability to gather reasonably retrievable information to organize and perform basic financial analysis assignments. Ability to identify issues; analyze data; develop, recommend, and implement, solutions.

  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to clearly and concisely convey technical information, both written and verbal, to a broad audience.

  • Basic proficiency using spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports. Experience using computer spreadsheets and database applications for report generation and analysis, with intermediate-to-advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel functions. Experienced with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Effective interpersonal skills; broad service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. Under management guidance, uses organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment. Ability to present opportunities and information in a tactful and diplomatic manner, with consistency in exercising independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.

  • Ability to function as a member of a team. Acts as a positive and contributing team player, with strong professional commitment and initiative.

  • Ability to expeditiously and accurately perform regular and routine financial and review transactions, recognizing areas of compliance or other concern and effectively presenting such information to leadership.

  • Basic knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources. Ability to interpret and implement UC, UC Health Sciences, UC San Diego, and regulatory agencies’ policies, procedures, and guidelines.


  • Experience with UCSD applications, including UCPath, Financial Link, Access Link, Query Link, and Employee Link.

Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $37,900 - $85,300 Annually

The University of California, San Diego is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Expected Pay Scale. Placement within the Expected Pay Scale is determined by internal equity, relevant qualifications, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).

Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).
