DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Director of Revenue and Operations, the Assistant Director of Professional Coding is responsible for the strategic direction, quality and productivity of Physician Group Coding and Charge Entry activities. The Assistant Director supervises all professional coding career, contract and charge capture resources as well as the team of second level auditors/ trainers. The Assistant Director is responsible for building and supporting a strong team and collaborative environment between management and staff for each area of responsibility. Through a collaborative approach, the Assistant Director will focus on improving the overall quality of coding, reducing errors, and mitigating coding-related denials.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

* Serves as the primary representative with the physician and administrative leaders in each sub-specialty, ensuring timely response to your customer’s requests and needs.

* Sets strategy and oversees coding education, auditing, training the coding staff, and educating other workforce members in coding, mapping, classification/grouping and proper documentation while remediating any deviation from compliant coding.

* Assures coding assignments are completed according to established quality/productivity standards and workflows are developed and optimized to achieve the intended result.

* Monitors effectiveness and recommends improvements to workflows, procedures and technology where appropriate.

* Analyzes all areas related to physician group coding, conducts all aspects of personnel management to include recruitment, performance management and improvement, training, compensation oversight, and labor relations issues.

* Oversees all performance improvement initiatives throughout the coding areas of responsibility. Independently applies business judgment, management concepts and provide necessary counseling to managers and staff on daily operational issues.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in business, health administration, healthcare information management or related area; or equivalent combination of experience and training.

  • A minimum of seven (7+) or more years of relevant coding experience, including four (4+) or more years of professional coding experience

  • A minimum of five (5+) or more years of managerial (or higher) level experience in a relevant setting.

  • Experience and proven success in knowledge of healthcare revenue cycle operations, concepts, and policies and their impact throughout the organization, with an in-depth understanding of related functions and issues, including coding, registration, billing, reimbursements, aging accounts, contractual adjustments, and charge capture.

  • RHIA, RHIT, CPC, CCS or CCS-P certification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced Degree in relevant field.
  • Academic hospital/health system experience.
  • Ten (10+) or more years of experience in professional fee coding.
  • Experience managing coding functions for a large multi-specialty group.
  • Prior Epic and 3M CAC experience.
  • Experience overseeing HCC coding initiatives.
  • Strong experience with surgical, pathological and radiological coding.
  • Outpatient Facility surgical coding experience.
  • Experience managing large teams in a union/represented environment.
  • Prior experience in a formal compliance role/function.
  • Prior experience as an auditor.
