Enrollment Management (EM) is a multi-unit department currently within the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs. The Unit is led by the Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management (AVC EM), who serves as the Chief Enrollment Officer of the University. EM is comprised of multiple high-profile, core functional units including: the Office of Admissions, Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid & Scholarships Office, Enrollment Management Technology Services (EMTS), Cal-SOAP, Creative Services, Enrollment Analytics, and the Business Office. EM’s core functions oversee undergraduate admissions and student outreach, continuing student enrollment management, and financial aid and scholarship management.
The San Diego and Imperial Counties California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP) unit provides services and programming intended to increase the number of students who prepare for and enter post-secondary institutions. The grant is administered by a Consortium of local colleges and universities, school districts, and other educational entities who cooperate to combine resources and provide matching funds for this state-funded project. UC San Diego serves as the fiscal agent for the project, administering state funds, allocated to the project through the California Student Aid Commissions (CSAC), and serves as the employer of 8 project staff members.
Under the general supervision of the Cal-SOAP Director, the Assistant Director oversees the overall administration of the San Diego County Cal-SOAP Program. This position is responsible for independently working with assigned institutions and organizations to plan and implement a wide range of academic preparation programming in order to increase post-secondary access for high school students. Develops and maintains program visibility in schools by conducting presentations and serving as a liaison on financial aid and college admissions requirements to students, parents, counselors, administrators and community groups. As a senior representative, develops, leads and maintains collaborative relationships with K-14 and higher education institutions and / or community entities, as well as develops collaborative relationships with other college-going programs. This position will serve students throughout San Diego County yearly, by developing academic and advisement programs, through a collaboration of federal, state and local funding. Will recruit, select, train, and supervise professional and student staff. Develops and monitors a budget of $300,000 and matching educational funds. Analyzes and manages data and prepares quarterly and annual reports for the Director. Serves as a staff member to the Cal-SOAP Advisory Board and other UC campus communities as assigned.
- Must be available to work evenings/weekends during peak periods; some domestic travel may be expected.
Strong knowledge and experience working with educational equity programs serving a diverse student population. Demonstrated effective experience and skill in working with students from diverse ethnic, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds.
Strong knowledge of up-to-date information on K-12 and higher education policies and issues. Ability to assess their impact on program strategies. Knowledge of state and national trends as they related to Cal-SOAP Programs and understanding of related issues in higher education.
Knowledge of K-12 and higher education institutions (UC, CSU, CC, etc.), admissions and financial aid requirements, and the ability to interpret policies and procedures to youth, parents, and school representatives.
Knowledge of youth and adolescent development theory, including issues facing low-income, first generation urban youth. Experience in planning, and implementing informational, motivational, academic and personal support programs and services for economically disadvantaged students.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community contacts.
Strong knowledge of high school graduation and college entrance requirements Knowledge of post-secondary admission requirements in order to be able to counsel students about college preparatory courses.
Demonstrated cultural competency with respect to race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status. Demonstrated sensitivity and experience working with students from low-income, educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
Strong communications (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively on a one-to-one basis.
Significant experience advising and supporting educationally disadvantaged students regarding postsecondary opportunities and careers. Knowledge of the research and theoretical perspectives on the various factors affecting student learning and achievement in K-12.
