The Assistant Chief Pharmacy Officer is the key pharmacy executive for inpatient and outpatient pharmacy finance, data analytics, 340B program, and drug purchasing. Duties include acquiring and analyzing data from multiple sources on behalf of Chief Pharmacy Officer and others inside and outside of the Department. This person has key relationships within Pharmacy, and several other departments, including finance, revenue cycle, information systems, materials, bioengineering, nursing, etc.

The incumbent manages a highly specialized technical function within Pharmacy and has responsibility to achieve broadly stated goals directly and through subordinate managers. They will determine objectives, direct programs, develop strategies and policies, manages human, financial, and physical resources, and functions. They will also proactively assess risk to establish systems and procedures to protect organizational assets. They will determine strategies for programs with organization-wide impact.

Other functions include designing and leading operations across multiple sites, accountability for the overall administrative planning and coordination of staffing, fiscal and material resources. Assists with the development and implementation of new policies and protocols and use of technology.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Directs and oversees managers and supervisors in assigned areas adhering to defined drug protocols, schedules, workflow systems, budgets, and performance requirements. Develops and implements standards, processes and approaches to deliver timely and quality service.

  • Oversees pharmacy operations to ensure quality and regulatory standards are consistently met. Partners with managers across clinical and administrative disciplines to integrate services for efficiency and efficacy. Ensures compliance with internal policy and external regulations.

  • Develops and reviews long term strategic goals with Chief Pharmacy Officer. Oversees the establishment of service, productivity and cost containment metrics. Develops new programs and initiatives based on industry best practices.

  • Develops and coordinates implementation of protocols for drug procurement, storage, usage and distribution.

  • Develops processes and analytics to assure viability of existing programs and patterns, and to optimize productivity; Reviews and approves proposals for operational performance improvement projects that impact service.

  • Forecasts, develops and monitors fiscal performance for all areas of pharmacy services. Continuously monitors budget expenditures, coordinates resource needs and evaluates acquisition of new supplies and equipment. Analyzes and prepares variance analyses of budgeted resources and investigates discrepancies.

  • Represents pharmacy services in interactions with clinical staff, community groups, and other healthcare organizations, through active participation on committees and task forces. Actively participates as a member or advisor on committees related to patient care, safety and drug therapy.

  • Works with subordinate management to evaluate core competencies in Pharmacy personnel. Reviews and approves individual leadership / professional development plans, with succession planning needs in mind. Identifies the need for professional development initiatives for staff. Encourages all staff to develop expertise.


  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm D) or equivalent training.

  • Registered Pharmacist - issued by the state of California (RPH).

  • Eight (8+) or more years of relevant experience, advanced knowledge, and applied background in Pharmacy practice.

  • Extensive knowledge in relevant business activities.

  • PGY1 Residency in Pharmacy.


  • PGY2 Residency in a relevant area.
  • BPS Board Certification in a relevant area
  • MS, MBA, MHA, or other relevant graduate degree
  • Experience supervising pharmacists and/or pharmacy technicians


  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical including immunization and drug screen.
