The Office of Research Compliance and Integrity (RCI) facilitates research, innovation and education for global excellence and is responsible for broad oversight, resources and education for the integrity and compliance issues relating to the conduct of research. RCI has oversight and responsibility for Research Integrity and Misconduct, Conflict of Interest, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee Office, Export Control, Dual Use of Research Concern, Facilities Security and monitoring for Foreign Influences, Conflict of Commitment and Conflict of Interest, Good Clinical Practices training, Responsible Conduct of Research training and ClinicalTrials.gov administration as well as general research compliance monitoring and other related matters. RCI is modeled after the core elements of an effective compliance program which includes high level oversight, written policies and procedures, training and education, reporting and communication, monitoring and auditing, corrective action and discipline/enforcement (based on established UC San Diego policies and procedures, State and Federal regulations and referrals to applicable institutional offices).

The Animal Welfare Specialist is responsible for IACUC-assigned inspections and reporting duties related to the federal regulations for the welfare of animals in research. Ensures compliance with these regulations, guidelines, and policies across campus. Reviews animal use protocols for scientific and animal welfare concerns as well as compliance with Federal and IACUC polices. Communicates with researchers regarding protocol revisions and approvals, post-approval compliance issues, and other sensitive issues. Advises and educates faculty, staff, and students, regarding Federal and campus polices governing the use of animals in research.
Bachelor's degree in related area and a minimum 5 years’ professional experience in animal research or animal science, or a combination of equivalent experience/training.
Thorough knowledge and ability to apply all relevant Federal, state, and university regulations, policies, and federal guidance documents. Expert knowledge of complex federal, state, and local regulations, policies and procedures regarding the welfare of animals in research, teaching and training.
Advanced level of understanding of veterinary and scientific terminology and procedures.
Understanding of the need to balance medical and scientific progress with animal welfare.
Demonstrated self-discipline and sound, independent judgment completing complex assignments.
Proven ability to work independently and effectively under tight deadlines. Demonstrated attention to detail.
Excellent written communication skills (including correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation) for report writing, publication, letters, memos, and electronic mail.
Demonstrated proficiency in public speaking.
Strong interpersonal skills, particularly regarding sensitive issues. Skill in communicating with people of diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. Ability to exercise judgment, tact, and firmness with researchers, staff, and the public. Ability to communicate with faculty, deans, directors, and others on a professional level in specialized fields of knowledge.
- Professional certification in one or more of the following: CPIA (Certified Professional in IACUC Administration), CMAR (Certified Manager Animal Resources), ILAM (Institute for Laboratory Animal Management), LATG (Laboratory Animal Technologist), RVT (Registered Veterinary Technician).
Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check and DMV check results.
A California Driver License is required for the use of UC vehicle and participate in the DMV Pull Program.
Must work in biological, chemical and radioactive hazard areas.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $59,700 - $124,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $28.59 - $59.53
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
