The Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI) an organized research unit at UCSD, was established to provide education, training and infrastructure for clinical research in the San Diego area. It encompasses four hospital systems, two universities and four biomedical research organizations. It receives partial funding from a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) from the NIH, National Center for Advancing Translational Science. The ACTRI functions under the direction of Gary S. Firestein, M.D., Director, and Senior Associate Vice Chancellor Health Sciences at UC San Diego.
The ACTRI Web Content Manager works directly with ACTRI service units to demonstrate the features and capabilities of the ACTRI to the UCSD and greater San Diego community using the Web Content Management System (CMS).
They build strong relationships across ACTRI units and other clinical research-related departments at UCSD, to stay aware of process changes, milestones, restructurings, and other developments that merit consideration for inclusion on the ACTRI web site. They use their judgement, experience, and knowledge of clinical research to act as a central decision-maker on ACTRI’s web presence. In tandem with other communication team members, the ACTRI Web Content Manager forms the hub of our online presence and continuing evolution.
The ACTRI Web Content Manager will work with current web application programming frameworks and industry best practices for security and accessibility. As a self-motivated and experienced communications professional, the incumbent will have a full understanding of industry practices, community standards, and relevant policies and procedures and will act as a resource to all stakeholders involving the ACTRI website and standard web technologies while acting as the main point of contact to lead web design, implementations, and maintenance of the website's front end user interface, user experience, and back end integrations when needed.
Under general supervision, this position will act as the primary contact to update, maintain the ACTRI website and fulfill inquiries from ACTRI stakeholders to ensure the latest content is refreshed as needed. The position applies user experience design concepts, methods, and techniques, relevant policies and procedures to resolve a variety of user experience design issues.
Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced digital communications professional to produce design and layout for a variety of non-routine and moderately complex web site applications; ensure search engine optimization; and develop social media platforms. Demonstrates a full understanding of industry practices and organization policies and procedures. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
Seven years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training.
Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of design and user experience, including skill to design in an appealing, lively and relevant way.
Thorough skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional web sites that provide web content consistent with the organization's message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives.
Excellent oral, written, and verbal communications skills, with ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse group of people. Excellent problem solving skills.
Experience developing written content for the web, knowledgeable regarding best web content practices, web page design and construction.
Demonstrated knowledge and use of proper English grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence construction and formatting styles. Experience in proofreading and editing.
Ability to read and analyze technical or complex content and write on those subjects in understandable terms for a general audience.
Experience with the design, development, modification and deployment of software, including object-oriented programming concepts. Experience developing sites using WordPress CMS, and Static HTML. Working knowledge of the latest version of the WordPress CMS, including updating and creating modules, customizing the design of sites, and enabling sites to be responsive.
Intermediate knowledge of HTML.
Experience working in a scientific/medical research environment.
Knowledge of research and interviewing skills to collect data and content.
Excellent time management and strong demonstrated organizational and multi-tasking skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility with the ability to work in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community with staff, professionals, and others.
Solid computer skills using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email system, and a variety of web-based programs.
Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems.
Thorough interpersonal communication skills.
Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and / or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
Ability to establish priorities, meet multiple and frequently changing deadlines with flexibility, process a high volume on occasion, and maintain a high level of accuracy.
