This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at ACTRI and remote.


The Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI) an organized research unit at UCSD, was established to provide education, training and infrastructure for clinical research in the San Diego area. It encompasses four hospital systems, two universities and four biomedical research organizations. It receives partial funding from a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) from the NIH, National Center for Advancing Translational Science.

The Web Developer works directly with ACTRI service units to demonstrate the features and capabilities of the ACTRI Web Content Management System (CMS).

The Web Developer will work with current web application programming frameworks and industry best practices for security and accessibility. As a self-motivated and experienced software professional, will have a full understanding of industry practices, community standards, and relevant policies and procedures and will act as a resource to all stakeholders involving the ACTRI website and standard web technologies while acting as the main point of contact to lead web design, implements, and maintenance of the website's front end UX as well as any back end integrations.

Under general supervision, this position will act as the primary contact to update, maintain the ACTRI website and fulfill inquiries from ACTRI stakeholders to ensure the latest content is refreshed as needed. The position applies user experience design concepts, methods, and techniques, relevant policies and procedures to resolve a variety of user experience design issues.

They will actively and heavily collaborates with the ACTRI Service Units, leaders, academic departments, contracted developers and other technical staff to manage the ACTRI website and related software applications and tools, WordPress or legacy content management systems (CMS) that form the backbone of the public-facing ACTRI web presence. The incumbent will consult with stakeholders to design, develop, QA test and maintain web templates, CSS style sheets, JavaScript, and other related elements. The Web Developer will assist with the review, prioritization, and project scope or requirements of web projects/requests/builds.


  • Six years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two years of related experience/training.

  • Experience with common programming tools. This includes advanced skills in Photoshop and Dreamweaver. Experience with development environment's such as Visual Studio.

  • Intermediate skills associated with the design, development, modification and deployment of software, including object-oriented programming concepts. Demonstrated experience developing sites using Kentico CMS, Wordpress CMS, and Static HTML. Working knowledge of the latest version of the Wordpress CMS, including updating and creating modules, customizing the design of sites, and enabling sites to be responsive. Demonstrated knowledge of programming languages/Frameworks such as .Net, C#, PHP, jQuery / JavaScript, along with expert knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap.

  • Knowledge of other IT related areas. Understanding of web browser functionalities, variances and limitations, mobile optimization, and web server protocols.

  • Demonstrated software repository skills. Demonstrated experience using Git.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications. Ability to investigate, learn about, and incorporate new client-side technologies into web site design and function.

  • Knowledge of secure software development.

  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.

  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of fundamental marketing concepts, search engine optimization, and web analytics.
