DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department embodies the university's tradition of excellence as a world-class leader in computer science and engineering education and research. Ranked in the top 20 nationwide, the department is dedicated to research, education and overall excellence.

CSE has approximately 73+ faculty FTE, 20+ professional researchers, 45+ staff in career/casual titles, 300+ tutors, and 135+ TAs. There are over 1,900 undergraduate students enrolled in 3 majors, with annual enrollments of 25,000+. The department has a graduate education program with over 900 students (~300 PhD students and over 600 Master's students).

POSITION OVERVEW:

Under general supervision by the Academic Personnel Manager, the Academic HR Analyst 2 is responsible for the analysis and administration for academic affairs and personnel for the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department. The incumbent is responsible for all personnel actions for assigned academic appointees which may include: Senate Faculty (Ladder Rank and Teaching), Research and Project Scientists, affiliates, and appointments in the Master of Advanced Study Programs (MAS) and Summer Session. Duties include independent responsibility for: management of academic personnel; new appointments, recruitment and hiring, merit and promotion files of assigned academic employees; grievance/disciplinary actions; formation and/or submission of policy exceptions; visas; UCPath data entry.

Responsibilities include:

  • Resource and backup for postdoc, visiting scholar and visiting graduate students.

  • Coordinating volunteer paperwork for staff and ensuring compliance with University policy.

  • Backup for various HR functions including, but not limited to, timekeeping, student hires, and processing paperwork for all employees.

The candidate will be hired at either the Academic HR Analyst 1 or 2 level depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Hiring salary range for Academic HR Analyst 1: $59,000 - $63,000/year.

Hiring salary range for Academic HR Analyst 2: $64,000 - $73,000/year.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply/interpret organization and college policies and procedures which govern academic HR. Experience in higher education and an in-depth understanding of the academic process. Demonstrated previous experience in the areas of academic affairs and academic personnel administration at an academic institution.

  • Knowledge of organization, college and departmental formal and informal policies and procedures and understanding of variances to stated policies. Experience working with policies and procedures as they relate to academic personnel, benefits and payroll administration. Knowledge of university pay scales, salary administration, benefits, payroll system and payroll forms related to academic affairs and academic personnel.

  • Knowledge of human resources management systems and other related business software programs and systems. Proficient skill in using personal computers and a wide variety of software packages for presentations, written communication, data processing and electronic communication (e.g. MS Word, Excel, Access, internet searches, Gmail, etc.).

  • Knowledge of unit academic culture and educational goals of discipline(s) served.

  • Analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations to Chairs / unit management. Ability to locate, extract and identify important information and data; analyze, synthesize and compile data, and present it in an effective and meaningful fashion.

  • Demonstrated organization, problem solving, and communication skills. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize daily operations and projects in order to meet rigid deadlines. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with ability to effectively compose, edit and proofread letters, memoranda, and summary reports with clear and concise expression, proper grammar, style, spelling and punctuation. Ability to provide information and/or instructions in a clear, concise manner. Skills to communicate clearly, effectively and professionally, in person, in writing, via phone and email with people from a variety of backgrounds.

  • Knowledge of immigration regulations and experience in the preparation and processing of visa applications. Ability to interpret university and INS visa, immigration and non-resident tax regulations related to employment.

  • Experience working with diverse populations of individuals, notably a large number of internationals. Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with students, staff, faculty, and all visitors to the office in a positive, helpful and welcoming manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently and effectively with minimal supervision. Ability to work under pressure and with frequent interruptions.

  • Excellent reading and comprehensive skills to analyze, understand and interpret complex materials and documents.

  • Ability to establish new procedures for faculty and department operations when necessary, along with skill to perform work according to established protocols.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of standard and computerized filing systems. Ability to maintain and cross-reference complex filing systems for rapid/easy retrieval by self and others.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $48,900 - $102,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $23.42 - $48.99

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
