The Student Health and Well-being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the expansion/development of a student health and well-being center, and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration,
CAPS delivers campus-based mental health services to over 40,000 registered UCSD undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students. CAPS' multicultural, multidisciplinary, and student-centered staff strives to deliver culturally proficient counseling services, outreach programming, consultation, research, and training opportunities. In collaboration with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, CAPS services support the academic mission of the University aimed at student success and retention and works toward the maintenance of an inclusive and healthy living and learning environment for individuals to flourish as they pursue their academic and career goals. CAPS is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services and the Post-doctoral Resident Training Program is APPIC affiliated. CAPS is fully committed to self-examination, peer review, and quality improvement through the utilization of data, outcome, and client experience measurements.
Under the general supervision of the Director or designee, the incumbent performs specialized mental health social work to support students to enhance their educational experience and reduce the impact of mental conditions and personal distress on their wellbeing through culturally competent assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning and referrals to campus and community resources. The incumbent will develop interventions, treatment plans, bridge care, monitor progress, and assure effective coordination of care between providers at CAPS, other campus resources, and mental health providers in the surrounding community.
The services provided will include triage, crisis intervention, focused and intermittent psychotherapy, as well as coordination of care and specialized case management for high-risk students discharged from the hospital. Treatment plans may result in off-campus referrals to intensive outpatient and inpatient programs and specialized and/or long term psychotherapy. When appropriate, the incumbent will also work with University Administrators, Student Affairs and Academic Departments for effective collaboration and timely coordination of care, including medical leave of absence and readmission.

Master's degree from an accredited school of social work. Possession of a clinical social worker license issued by the California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners and three (3) years of post-master's experience.
Proven ability to manage difficult and complex mental health cases with thorough understanding of the legal issues surrounding working with higher risk students.
Knowledge and experience providing time-limited counseling and psychotherapy, evaluation, diagnosis, and crisis intervention.
Demonstrated experience with specialty mental health referrals such as Intensive Outpatient Programs, Inpatient Programs, Partial Hospitalization Programs, Psychoeducational Testing.
Demonstrated experience directing, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating case management services for individuals with multiple personal and life problems
Cultural competency in working with diverse populations including excellent communication skills and advocacy skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills in general, and specific to mental health consultation work, are required including the ability to: develop strong working relationships; positively represent CAPS across diverse communities; and interact effectively with both health care professionals and non-professionals regarding mental health concerns.
Thorough knowledge of student development theories to explain college student behavior, including psychosocial theories, cognitive/structural theories, and ecological and integrative theories.
Working knowledge of electronic medical/mental health records systems (EMR or EHR).
At all times, demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others. All staff members are required to uphold the UCSD Principles of Community and to promote a positive and collaborative team environment.
- Specific training and/or experience working with problems particularly prevalent in college-age population, and in interdisciplinary setting focusing on student wellness.
