This is a 100% limited appointment for One year with the possibility of extending or conversion to career status based on the needs of the department and funding availability.


Incumbent will perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance, alteration and repair of buildings, related facilities and equipment as a part of a regular maintenance crew, or assist skilled tradesmen.

Under the close supervision of the Divisional Facilities Manager, the incumbent will assist with the installation and maintenance and/or removal/relocation of various equipment and furniture in the Division of Biological Sciences. These duties are performed in any designated research support areas (including laboratories and office spaces). Duties include, but are not limited to, hanging white boards, painting, moving, shelving and demolition, and pre and post renovation cleaning. In addition, occasional duties may include light construction such as installing cabinetry, counter tops and shelving, patching drywall and other duties as assigned. May drive a truck or other light duty vehicle in course of duties.


  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations; and demonstrated mechanical aptitude.

  • Ability to maintain acceptable attendance record, punctuality and meet deadlines established by supervisor.

  • Skill and ability to operate standard power tools including: drills, sanders, and saws.

  • Skill and ability to perform basic carpentry and woodworking using related tools and measuring devices.

  • Skill and ability to perform light construction and minor repairs using standard tools and equipment

  • Skill and ability to perform interior painting jobs, including preparatory work, using standard related tools and materials.

  • Some knowledge of the properties and applications of various metals, woods, plastics, and laminates

  • Basic knowledge of safety practices applicable to shops, construction, and a variety of research environments.

  • Ability to effectively and accurately communicate with researchers, maintenance crew, contractors, and tradespersons.

  • Skills and ability with Windows OS and a variety of standard business software including email, browsers, word processing and spreadsheet. Willingness and ability to update and increase skills as needed to meet the goals of the unit and the division.

  • Ability to prepare and maintain, accurately and completely, a variety of drawings, forms, documents and files.

  • Willingness and ability to acquire and maintain needed safety training and/or certificates in order to work safely in all campus environments including research laboratories.

  • Adhere to the UCSD's Principles of Community in verbal and written communications and creating/maintaining a professional, courteous and collegial working environment.


  • Must have a valid California driver's license.

  • Background check and DMV check required.

  • Must be able to lift over 50 lbs.

  • Must be able to cover distances on foot to a variety of buildings/facilities, in widely separated areas of campus.

  • Must be able to work safely on a ladder.

  • Must be able to work weekends and additional hours as needed to complete a project.
