Under supervision of the Center’s Leadership, the Field Researcher 2 / Bridge Staff for UC San Diego Community Stations in Tijuana is responsible for providing crucial support to the design of Educational Programs in the Stations; this includes participating in the programmatic design and implementation of university-community research and educational protocols, implementation of programs, as well as support on visualization to assist in these efforts. In particular, this position examines the relationship between the goals and missions of local community institutions and the systems of urban development that can support our partners under the socio-economic and cultural realms.

In addition, this position includes participating in the coordination of the Mellon Intergenerational Scholars program that funds undergraduate project engagement during the year and the Field Internship during the summer; facilitating visits of groups of students, faculty, and others to the Tijuana UCSD Community Stations; coordinating communication and project development between the university, community partners, and local governments; supporting grant writing and project timelines; keeping detailed documentation of budget and partner communications; participating in co-producing materials for physical intervention and social capacity-building project support; and maintaining extensive documentation and proven methods for dissemination of key information.

The Field Researcher 2 / Bridge Staff will assist with identifying best practices for community-based collaborations for undergraduate research training and "community development" within the different Educational programs, projects and initiatives of the CGJ, as well as their implementation to enhance the capacity of the Center in institutional and foundation outreach efforts.

Additionally, the Field Researcher 2/ Bridge Staff receives direction and guidance from the Directors on other assignments as requested. The Field Researcher 2/ Bridge Staff works closely with the Directors, research staff, and other professional staff members to create a cohesive team environment and generate synergy among all participants in order to meet the Center's overall objectives.


  • Bachelor's degree and two years of experience in related area (e.g. arts, design, and humanities, social sciences, environmental sciences, natural sciences etc.) and / or equivalent combination of experience / training.

  • Experience in developing curricula and educational programming, with a focus on the challenges of underserved communities.

  • Demonstrated communication skills with project team members. Excellent interpersonal communication skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility with students, staff, faculty, and visitors from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

  • Demonstrates attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability and experience writing reports, correspondence, and working with spreadsheets. Ability to keep clear and accurate records.

  • Demonstrates ability to work in ambiguous conditions. Proven ability to take relevant responsible action as required.

  • Demonstrates ability to work with a team, and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Proven capacity to work independently. Demonstrated leadership and facilitation skills to supervise students staff.

  • Experience multi-tasking and performing under pressure of deadlines.

  • Familiarity with writing, managing, and implementing grants.

  • Working knowledge of research discipline, principles, concepts, analysis and / or operations being conducted at field / remote sites.

  • Working knowledge of safety, legal, cultural and regulatory requirements relative to field research responsibility.

  • Working knowledge of local customs and operations at field / remote sites. Proven experience in binational community relations and coalition-building.

  • Demonstrates ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with remote research partners.

  • Proficient research and analytical skills. Strong research, analytical skills and ability to support physical interventions i.e. exhibitions, installations, etc.

  • Familiar with theoretical and practical knowledge of architecture, urbanism, design and art installations as acquired through education and field work/research experience.

  • Familiarity with digital visualization technologies (e.g. Adobe suite, etc.).

  • Ability to develop content into succinct visual documents to communicate with various audiences, both in English and Spanish.

  • Ability to use sound judgment and make decisions in the field if necessary.

  • Experience with public speaking and presenting to large groups.

  • Bilingual: Proficient spoken and written Spanish competency.

The position requires a flexible work schedule including time spent in both studio and in the field in San Diego and Tijuana. Must be able and willing to work on weekends and nights occasionally, and during the summer session. Must be able to travel off-campus to UC San Diego Community Stations in Tijuana. Must be proficient in spoken and written Spanish. Must be able to provide own transportation and to travel to Tijuana and Mexico. Must be familiar with, and comfortable in Tijuana, and legally able to travel into Mexico.

Bilingual: Proficient spoken and written Spanish competency.
