This is a part-time 37% Limited position for one (1) year that may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs of the department.

DESCRIPTION

Named for environmentalist, nature writer, and Sierra Club founder John Muir, and inspired by his remarkable life, John Muir College of UC San Diego stresses the spirit of individual choice and responsibility within the framework of a welcoming and supportive community. Muir was the second college to be founded at UC San Diego and admitted its first students in 1967. Muir is a special place where generations of students have felt recognized and valued as individuals and experienced a strong sense of belonging within this large research university. Under close supervision of the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, the Graduate Assistant, will coordinate and implement the orientation program. The Graduate Assistant will also supervise, lead, and participate in, a variety of aspects of the orientation program.

Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Mandatory dates: January/February Orientation Leader selection, Orientation training sessions, Orientation dates, and Triton Day yield events.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Ability to assess student needs and translate them into educational programs. Experience with assessing student learning outcomes.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the needs of a diverse student population. This includes the needs and challenges students face every day.

  • Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.

  • Effective interpersonal skills.

  • Skills in service orientation, active listening, critical thinking, and facilitation.

  • Verbal communication, written communication and organization skills. Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. Skills in service orientation, active listening, critical thinking. Skills in conflict resolution, negotiation, facilitating groups, and referral techniques.

  • Skill in selecting, training, supervising and evaluating student and professional staff.

  • Ability to interpret and apply University policies, regulations and procedures.

  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently. Ability to function as an effective team leader.

  • Ability to facilitate small group discussions.

  • A strong desire to experience and learn about Student Affairs in a University setting.

  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • Skill in training students to set goals, prioritize, plan, budget, implement and evaluate social, cultural, community
