The Student Health and Well-being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes the expansion of the student health and well-being center under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration.

SHS provides oversight of primary urgent care, women’s health and specialty care for a student body of over 42,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students as well as supporting services including laboratory, pharmacy, imaging. SHS' multicultural, multidisciplinary and student-centered staff consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, Social workers, medical assistants, pharmacists, x-ray technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical lab assistant, administrative and other healthcare professionals. SHS provides integrated clinical services to address the medical needs of the individual students, as well as to foster the well-being of the students as a whole person. In addition, SHS supports the public health needs of the campus community. SHS is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and is fully committed to continuous quality and safety improvement through the utilization of data, outcome, and patient experience measurements.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for providing comprehensive primary health care services for acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, primarily for adolescent and young adult patients in both primary care and urgent care setting. The NP will perform patient examination, evaluation, treatment and follow up care for both acute and chronic illness. The NP will order appropriate lab and radiological testing and interpret test results. The NP will manage gynecological healthcare including assessment, treatment, screening and counseling for Family Planning. The NP will assess and provide treatment and counseling for mental health disorders. The NP will provide patient education and counseling regarding general health maintenance and preventive recommendations. The NP will follow an informed and appropriate process for referrals and assess when specialty care is necessary. The NP will prescribe medication accurately and appropriately. The NP may be assigned to participate in research and/or quality improvement studies.


  • Must possess the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing; State of California R.N. and N.P. License, State of California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number, current DEA number.

  • Current Nurse Practitioner (NP) Specialty Certification from one of the following Nursing Boards: AANP, ANCC, NCC, PNCB, AACN.

  • BLS/CPR certification at time of hire.

  • Minimum of six (6) months of experience working as a nurse practitioner.

  • Demonstrated experience working in outpatient medical settings, (preferably at a Student Health Services Clinic) with adolescents and young adults.

  • Knowledge and skill in conducting patient health history, interview and counseling.

  • Skill in performing physical examination, ability to distinguish between normal and abnormal findings, formulate medical/nursing assessment, develop plan of treatment, implementation, evaluation and follow-up.

  • Skill in screening patients for routine and recommended health care needs.

  • Skill in ordering and interpretation of diagnostic tests including laboratory and radiologic data and EKG's.

  • Skill in evaluation, assessment, treatment of common gynecological problems as well as well women health maintenance and family planning.

  • Skill in working with acute illnesses and injuries in the urgent care setting.

  • Skill to communicate in a helpful, nonjudgmental, effective and informative manner, in person or by telephone; excellent interpersonal skills, tact, diplomacy, in order to interact effectively with all levels of professional staff and patients; ability to work as a team member.

  • Knowledge of campus and community agencies most frequently used in ambulatory care.

  • Demonstrated experience in using electronic medical records and understanding of medical record management.

  • Cultural competency in working with diverse populations including excellent communication skills and advocacy skills.


  • Current ACLS Certificate.

  • Skill in practice of simple procedures including but not limited to: suturing and laceration repair, incision and drainage, nail trephinement, foreign body removal, wound care and debridement, skin biopsy, skin lesion injection, placement and removal contraceptive devices, and splinting of extremities.

  • Experience in Travel Medicine.


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Evening and weekend hours as scheduled.
