Reporting to the Senior Development Marketing Writer, the Senior Writer writes and edits a variety of comprehensive and sensitive material for stylistic consistency, logic, organization, rational development of content, and emphasis that serve internal and external audiences. Researches, selects sources for and conducts interviews, and ensures accuracy of written pieces. Recommends content for printed and digital pieces, particularly in the Health Sciences fields.

Working in collaboration with Alumni, Annual Giving and Pipeline Development, and other Advancement staff (i.e. Development Officers) and Campaign staff, faculty, University Development Health Sciences staff and other communications colleagues across campus, the Senior Writer's main responsibilities include strategic solution writing for a variety of mediums, social media, direct mail and email in support of the university's fundraising goals. Other projects will range from highly technical scientific proposals, marketing pieces for use with a variety of audiences, to highly personalized communications that help advance the fundraising goals of the university. Researches, analyzes, compiles and evaluates data, compiles large amounts of disparate information and translates it into effective written pieces that support principal donor and prospect management activities and strategies. Assist with developing internal procedures to streamline writing requests, content management reviews, and approvals, and provide training to development professionals and assistants on these procedures. Working closely with Annual Giving Senior Development Marketing Writer and Project Manager and graphic design staff, assist with project coordination when needed, to provide comprehensive creative services to Alumni, Annual Giving and Pipeline Development and Advancement colleagues and to other Communications colleagues as requested.

  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.

  • Knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines. Ability to write in a variety of styles for audiences including individuals, foundations, and corporations, grateful patients, and a demonstrated knowledge of the philanthropic goals and preferences of such organizations.

  • Thorough skills to write clear, lively, engaging and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and / or the broader public, while ensuring adherence to the location's message.

  • Knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and / or web production. Thorough research and fact verification skills.

  • Effective interpersonal communications skills, including active listening and effective collaboration skills. Demonstrated ability to interview and work with a diverse group of individuals who would provide the basis for materials to be developed. Knowledge of message development and communications management preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail, project management and organizational skills. Ability to initiate and complete tasks with minimal supervision. Ability to prioritize work, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a time-constrained environment.

  • Demonstrated high degree of integrity, dependability, use of sound judgment with a strong work ethic.

  • Ability to grasp and integrate into practice university gift policy and management procedures. Ability to understand and work with financial information.

  • Proven understanding of philosophy of quality service and group process, with proven aptitude for working as part of a team. Proven ability to encourage and develop a collaborative and positive environment.

  • Demonstrated ability and knowledge of writing for multimedia presentations and content for web.

  • Working knowledge of the dynamics of fund raising and the concepts of development and advancement or equivalent. Experience using a constituent management database preferred.

  • Ability to work as part of a team, collaborating with colleagues; willingness to cooperate with and assist other staff members and business staff members in writing and editing. Strongly service oriented in attitude and actions.
