UC San Diego Health's Internal Medicine specializes in preventing, diagnosing and treating disease in adults. We offer general internists as well as medical subspecialists with training in fields such as cardiology, endocrinology or hepatology who together can provide our adults comprehensive and coordinated care in a welcoming environment.

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides timely and accurate assessment of the patient/ lient clinical, social, functional and continuing care needs through direct observation, data analysis and interviews in order to evaluate the need for intervention. Documents functional, situational and clinical assessment within 24 hours of patient/client contact. Assists patients who have financial difficulties in obtaining medications needed or treatments needed for their medical care.

Monthly reporting of trends and outcomes that identifies patient/client populations. Monthly outcomes reporting of client/patient based data to client/patient based teams in order to improve quality of case management services. Capable of seeing patients under nurse visits (blood pressure checks, UTIs and any previously ordered vaccines and therapeutic injections).

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Update skills matrix, employee files and ensure completion of skills and competency training. Lead by example and delegate tasks to make sure everyone is working to the top of their license per Scope of Practice Guidelines. Assess educational needs, orientation, planning and coordinating in-services to improve patient care. Provide performance feedback on back office team members to manager and escalate concerns or issues as necessary. Support manager with tasks such as Weekly/Daily schedules. Review and Sign Off of Immunizations/TB Records. Perform Auditing. Bulk Ordering. Monitors Pharmaceutical Ordering as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. Huddle with manager. Attends to emergency situations, walk-ins, assesses and dispositions patient, including attending to Abnormal Vital Signs, per policy. Verify medications, IV Medication push

Oversees Medical Assistants with the immunization services. Assists and adheres to audits, reporting, safety, infection control, and regulatory requirements. Monitors the safety and effectiveness of the environment and equipment. Attends Ambulatory Care Quality monthly meetings. Champion quality efforts, including survey site visits, POCT rounding, and other quality measures. Assist with leading efforts to improve the quality of care (PRIME, P4P, etc.)
IV start and monitoring. Annual Wellness Audit. UBET Chart Audits, Regulatory checks. Order Medications

FACILITATION OF OFFICE FLOW (help out if LVN resource needs help)
This position is intended to be visible and on the floor 80% of the time. Cover flow managers (Medical Assistants and LVN’s) during breaks and lunches. Will monitor all flow manager in boxes to identify flow stoppage and support needed. Stepping in and taking over ‘flow buster’ situations for back office staff i.e. emergency situations, urgent requests, etc. Assists the clinic in ensuring efficient clinic flow and provider productivity. Attend and/or run clinic daily huddles as needed. Round with back office staff and providers (staying in flow, troubleshooting flow busters, patient experience rounding). Serves as a utility player that can fill in any role if needed.

Rooming patients, discharge patients, complete visit orders (EKG, vaccines, POCT. neb, ear lavage), help restock rooms, complete refill requests via phone or fax, fax and scan documents, complete paperwork, put away supplies, phone in refill prescriptions (LVN, or RN).

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited school of Nursing.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the State of California.

  • BLS/CPR or BART certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Minimum one year nursing experience in an ambulatory setting.

  • Capability of consistently making intelligent decisions under pressure.

  • Possess good judgment, initiative, have an excellent attitude and be dependable.

  • Strong communication skills, strong critical and analytical thinking skills, and appreciation of diversity.


  • BSN
  • Primary Care/Internal Medicine experience.
  • Bilingual.


  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Selected candidate may be hired at the CNIII level pending review and approval by the Nurse Executive Council.
