DESCRIPTION

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, OASIS, the incumbent is responsible for a broad range of program support, program delivery, supervisory, and administrative functions related to skill development and academic support services of approximately 3000 students annually, with a priority of serving first-generation college students.

The ARC Humanities Lead develops and presents workshops, fosters collaboration with campus and community partners, and provides assistance to participants. The incumbent recruits, supervises, and trains student staff who provide academic writing and research support and assists with the planning and implementation of OASIS First-Year Interests Groups (FIGs). Additionally, the incumbent establishes and maintains liaisons with academic and campus departments vital to the implementation of OASIS ARC Humanities program services.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development. Graduation from college with major work in psychology, counseling, or related field, with experience in college-level student support service; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership. Ability to assess student needs and design academic support services accordingly.

  • Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching / learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy.

  • Knowledge of current pedagogy, technology, and trends, with demonstrated experience in developing instructional materials, curriculum design, development and implementation, and assessment of academic support programs, classes, and workshops geared to the specific needs of students within language arts and writing disciplines.

  • Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.

  • Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students.

  • Knowledge and experience in researching, compiling and analyzing data, and generating reports. Demonstrated ability to compile and analyze data, and prepare summary and or statistical reports and instructional materials with strong attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Knowledge of research methodologies and research designs. Skills in gathering, analyzing and synthesizing complex data for application in organizational strategic planning, and to determine program effectiveness.

  • Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.

  • Comprehension of theories and principles of higher education and student development, with ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality, with ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor while interacting with a variety of individuals and groups at all levels of the university community from diverse socio-economic to cultural/ethnic backgrounds and to maintain confidentiality.

  • Effective writing skills in order to formulate and present written material in a logical and comprehensive manner. Excellent English language skills including grammar, spelling and punctuation with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively on the phone or in person with a variety of individuals of diverse cultural and language backgrounds.

  • Knowledge of computer-based applications utilizing databases, word processing, spreadsheets, electronic mail, and web development tools including: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and calendar programs. Ability to identify and access online campus information systems and resources.

  • Excellent presentation skills; ease in communication to audiences of varying skill level and knowledge in classroom, auditorium, one on one and group settings; special skill in communicating complex activities to a diverse staff and faculty.

  • Experience in recruiting, training, supervising and evaluating performances of student employees.

  • Experience with event planning and/or trade shows. Familiarity with researching and formulating partnerships with external organizations, professional groups, etc.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance of background check.

  • Must be available during the eight-week Summer Bridge Program, July- August.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18). Completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form will be required.
