DESCRIPTION

The Employee Relations Advocate (ER Advocate) is an independent technical leader responsible for balancing a tripartite role of strengthening the relationship between employees and managers, adjudicating workplace concerns, and ensuring that organizational policies are followed consistently. The ER Advocate is part of a centralized team of Employee Relations Professionals who provide services to the Health System and Health Sciences enterprise (approximately 20,000 employees).

The ER Advocate will manage a caseload of numerous employee relations matters, working both autonomously and collaboratively with fellow team members and other internal/external partners. This includes, but is not limited to: workplace investigations, conflict resolution/mediation, workforce modification, time and attendance issues, policy oversight, performance management, litigation coordination, and proactive interventions to address workplace concerns.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Seven (7) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus three (3) years of related experience working within a dedicated employee relations department, which includes investigative experience (or equivalent case management, fact-finding experience).

  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills, especially in complex and nuanced situations.

  • Advanced knowledge of HR principles and procedures along with federal and state laws and regulations.

  • Advanced knowledge of employee relations practices and programs.

  • Experience and confidence to make difficult decisions and to exercise expert judgment when working with disputed issues.

  • Demonstrated resilience in managing a demanding caseload, balancing shifting priorities, and meeting deadlines.

  • High degree of empathy balanced against an ability to provide direct feedback and delivering difficult information.

  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm and professional when working in high-conflict and crisis situations.

  • Ability to strategize on developing long-term solutions for systemic issues.

  • Exceptional writing skills and the ability to consistently produce a high-level written product.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact and communicate verbally and in writing effectively with executives, senior leaders, members of management, and employees at all levels of the organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and present training to all levels of the organization.

  • Proven experience handling situations with differing perspectives and work through conflicts for the best possible outcomes for everyone involved.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working within a unionized environment.
  • HR Certification - SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • This position is eligible for full-time on-site or hybrid (telework) work arrangement.
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on clinical or business needs, as determined by the department, including evenings and weekends.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to travel to off-site meetings and events.
