This is a 6 to 12 month contract position, with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career status, dependent upon the availability of funding.

DESCRIPTION

Incumbent is responsible for IACUC-assigned inspections and reporting duties related to the federal regulations for the welfare of animals in research. Ensures compliance with these regulations, guidelines, and policies across campus.

Reviews animal use protocols for scientific and animal welfare concerns as well as compliance with Federal and IACUC polices. Communicates with researchers regarding protocol revisions and approvals, post-approval compliance issues, and other sensitive issues. Advises and educate faculty, staff, students, regarding Federal and campus polices governing the use of animals in research.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Thorough knowledge and ability to apply all relevant Federal, state, and university regulations, policies, and federal guidance documents. Expert knowledge of complex federal, state, and local regulations, policies and procedures regarding the welfare of animals in research, teaching and training.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and a minimum five (5) years professional experience in animal research or animal science, or a combination of relevant experience/training.

  • Advanced level of understanding of veterinary and scientific terminology and procedures.

  • Proven self-discipline and sound, independent judgment completing complex assignments.

  • Excellent written communication skills (including correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation) for report writing, publication, letters, memos, and electronic mail.

  • Strong interpersonal skills - particularly regarding sensitive issues. Skill in communicating with people of diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. Ability to exercise judgment, tact, and firmness with researchers, staff, and the public. Ability to communicate with faculty, deans, directors, and others on a professional level in specialized fields of knowledge.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in public speaking.

  • Understanding of the need to balance medical and scientific progress with animal welfare.

  • Proven ability to work independently and effectively under tight deadlines.

Preferred:

  • Professional certification in one or more of the following: CPIA (Certified Professional in IACUC Administration), CMAR (Certified Manager Animal Resources), ILAM (Institute for Laboratory Animal Management), LATG (Laboratory Animal Technologist), RVT (Registered Veterinary Technician)

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • A California Driver’s License is required for the use of UC vehicles.

  • Must work in biological, chemical and radioactive hazard areas.
