Depending on the experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the SRA 1 or SRA 2 NEX level.


The incumbent will assist with and perform standard laboratory procedures with Human Pluripotent Stem Cells (hESC/iPSC) and develop brain organoids as well as other experimental procedures. Incumbent will assist PIs and other lab members with studies. Studies will include: 1) General growth, expansion, maintenance, population enrichment, and induction of specific neural lines from stem cells. Induction of neural lines will involve the generation of: human astrocytes (using 3D neurosphere culture techniques), organoids, and human neurons. 2) Gene manipulation of stem cells with silencing or overexpression viral vectors constructs. 3) Characterization of resultant phenotypes (by molecular, multi-electrode array, and imaging techniques). 4) Molecular biology techniques involving the isolation of RNA and protein to quantify gene and protein expression.

Procedures will include molecular biology (generation of transgene constructs, PCR, RNA isolation and quantification), histology, light microscopy of embryonic and neuronal cell lines as well as basic molecular and cellular biology techniques (Cell transfection, genomic screening, cloning, gene expression, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, Western blot, ELISA, tissue culture and maintenance of biochemistry equipment). Perform routine tissue culture of primary cells, preparation of lentiviruses and viral infection techniques. The candidate will be responsible for oral and written reports every other week.


  • Theoretical and/or practical knowledge in cellular and molecular biology, immunology, stem cell or related field.

  • Ability to perform molecular biology techniques including PCR, DNA preparation/extraction, gel electrophoresis.

  • Capable of performing biochemistry and laboratory techniques and experience to prepare buffers and solutions, as well as various staining solutions.

  • Experience with general lab maintenance including cleaning, stocking supplies.

  • Experience with the operation of a personal computer and software application, such as Access, MS Word and Excel.

  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other staff members, students, faculty and scientists in a multi-cultural lab.

  • Ability to prioritize and perform efficiently. Skill and ability to keep accurate data.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.


  • Experience with UCSD policies and procedures and basic safety rules and issues.
  • Experience with human pluripotent stem cells.


  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Willing to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
