Under general supervision, the Integrated Pest Management Supervisor will plan, coordinate and supervise assigned staff in multiple phases of landscape operations and maintenance, particularly pest control, and may provide supervisory support as needed in the areas of turf maintenance, horticulture, tree maintenance, irrigation, equipment operation/maintenance, and landscape construction. Manage, instruct and train three (3) career Pest Control Operators in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs in the use of equipment and chemicals, work methods, and new procedures and techniques. Keep current with state and federal laws determining the use of pesticides and other chemicals used in the landscape field and train staff to follow strictly all applicable regulations.
Oversee and document the use and storage of pesticides, chemicals and fertilizers in accordance with regulatory requirements and industry standards. Meet with internal and external customers to coordinate regular pest control treatment and initiate special requests as required. Work with other campus departments, and state and local agencies to select appropriate products and chemicals for pest management/eradication in ecologically sensitive zones. Determine when outside contractors must be utilized to augment department staff.
Assign work to designated staff and conduct periodic inspections of areas to maintain standards and correct potential safety hazards. Monitor and scout for pest and diseases, perform pathology and mortality inspections, and diagnose to assign proper treatment and remedial action to Pest Control Operators. Responsible for inspection, maintenance, repair and inventory of tools and equipment. Recommend and develop policy-setting processes and play an integral role in decision-making.
May be required to work outside normal schedule for emergencies as necessary.
Must be available to respond to emergencies, work on-call, rotating swing shift and holidays.

Proven experience (typically at least three (3) years experience) in pest management, entomology, plant pathology, horticulture, and ecology.
Working knowledge in landscape/groundskeeping services. Must possess broad knowledge and work experience in management of all areas of Integrated Pest Management and landscape maintenance in a large academic, hospital or commercial setting.
Strong leadership or supervisory experience planning and coordinating the work of others and maintaining solid productivity and high morale. Supervisory experience including, but not limited to: recommending hires, promotions, classifications, progressive discipline, dismissal actions and evaluating performance. Experience effectively following operational and human resources practices.
Proven ability to provide plant and pest identification. Proven ability to detect and identify pests and pathogens as well as contributing factors to their development.
Specific knowledge of turf grasses or combinations of turf grasses including growth characteristics, irrigation requirements, fertilization including trace minerals and diagnosis and treatment of infestation by noxious diseases and pests.
Specific knowledge of shrubs, trees and ground covers including growth characteristics, irrigation requirements, fertilization including trace minerals and diagnosis and treatment of infestation by noxious diseases and pests.
Demonstrated knowledge of soil types and conditions and the ability to perform and/or interpret soil analysis.
Proven experience working within and following standard safety regulations, policies, and procedures typical to the trade. Knowledge of and experience using appropriate safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Knowledge and experience with the proper and safe mixing, loading and application of chemicals. Basic knowledge of mechanical spray systems, such as pumps, booms and motors.
Experience assisting with budget preparation, ordering and managing supplies and maintaining inventory. Ability to understand revenue and loss reports. Ability to work with the department's financial systems and processes.
Experienced user of standard computer systems and applications such as, but not limited to: MS Office Word, Excel, and Outlook. Experience with other computer applications used in a facilities management operation.
Effective problem solving skills and use of sound judgment. Working decision making and reasoning skills, and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems and conduct operations analysis and quality control analysis. Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency or sensitive situations along with the ability to carry out work according to policies and procedures.
Proven experience by skill to logically analyze complex situations and data. Experience developing clear and concise reports or recommendations for management. Proven ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret data and provide an appropriate response.
Effective interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel. Experience supervising, planning and coordinating the work of others and maintaining solid productivity and high morale.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Must possess a California Department of Pesticide Regulations License of Qualified Applicator License (QAL). Higher license preferred.
State of California DFW 1389 (Pest Control) Trapper's License preferred.
Bloodborne pathogen and sharps disposal training preferred.
DOJ/FBI background check and clearances required prior to employment.
DMV driving record check clearance prior to employment. Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver License. This position will participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program.
This position is subject to completion of a pre-placement medical exam provided by Employee Health Services, given at no charge to the applicant.
This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
Must be physically able to perform all essential functions and be able to work alone. Must be able to perform heavy and physically demanding work for lengthy and continuous periods of time. This position will walk, lift, stoop, push and bend. Ability to carry a back pack sprayer weighing up to 25 pounds on the back. Must be able to maneuver 80 lbs. bags and containers on carts with additional help (2 or more people).
Must be able to wear a full-face air-purifying respirator and protective clothing for up to thirty minute intervals. May require use of respirator and protective clothing.
Must be able to work in areas of constant noise and loud noise. Work is performed outdoors in extreme weather, and in dusty, dirty, smelly, noisy conditions. May be subject to work in extreme weather conditions including dusty, heat and moisture.
This position may, at times, require the individual to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include, but are not limited to: asbestos, PCB's radioactive materials, industrial and laboratory chemicals, fuels, solvents, infectious materials and wastes, biological hazards and other materials labeled hazardous.
Required to wear a clean uniform and appropriate footwear.
