The Student Health and Well-being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego Health System plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture at UC San Diego that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the expansion/development of a student health and well-being center, and the transformation of existing departments under the oversight of the Executive Director into a cohesive, multi-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Student Health Services (SHS) and SHW Administration.
Health Promotion Services (HPS) is responsible for campus wide education, outreach and prevention efforts on a variety of health topics. HPS runs The Zone, a well-being space for students. SHW uses a public health model in conceptualizing the delivery of programs and services. HPS provides services related to alcohol and other drugs (AOD), physical activity, nutrition, smoking cessation, sleep, stress, sexual health, emotional intelligence and mental health topics among others. HPS utilizes peer educators, peer coaching, marketing and a variety of campus wide campaigns to impact the students on a population basis. Other programs are targeted to groups of students at higher risk on selected well-being topics. Limited direct services are available such as clinical nutrition and AOD educational groups.
Reporting to the Director of Health Promotion Services (HPS), this position provides daily oversight of Health Promotion Services. Works with the Health Promotion Services Director to organize and help facilitate staff meetings, annual retreats, and strategic planning sessions. This position provides leadership in vision, planning, implementation, and evaluation of campus-wide health promotion practices in order to create an environment that promotes student success and personal development. The incumbent will oversee the campus health needs assessment including administering and analyzing the National College Health Assessment, participate in evaluation and outcomes reporting, make recommendations on action to address issues within the department and exercise good judgment, innovation and professional approaches/techniques to solve problems, make decisions and manage conflict.
Ensure that the HPS team works holistically to meet the vision and goals of the department and support the institutional mission of the University. Using advanced and specialized expertise, designs and implements a wide variety of health promotion, education programs for the campus, and in conjunction with community outreach programs. Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data and situations requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solution.
Nine years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus five years of related experience/training.
Advanced knowledge of the health promotion and education field and / or related education programs and services.
Advanced knowledge associated with the design and delivery of health promotion and education programs.
Skills associated with both the development and delivery of diverse health education programs and services.
Requires effective interpersonal skills to deal with diverse client groups. Cultural competency in working with diverse populations including excellent communication skills and advocacy skills.
Effective organizational skills.
Interpersonal and diplomacy skills to identify and respond to organizational needs. Ability to maintain a professional demeanor during interactions with a wide variety of personalities in demanding situations. At all times, demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others; uphold the UCSD Principles of Community and promote a positive and collaborative team environment.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of proper business formats, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Ability to analyze, interpret and respond to client needs through the development, implementation and delivery of health-related programs.
Effective organizational skills. Expert skills associated with identifying organizational needs, specifically in the areas of program development and implementation for health coaching.
Ability to use discretion, maintain confidentiality and comply with all requirements in use of computer systems and access to any and all patient, student, employee and University data, in electronic and hard copy formats, in compliance with University, state and federal guidelines, including, but not limited to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Ability to adhere to and practice the mandatory University Core Values & Safety Standards of performance.
Complete and pass test/quiz for all required training assigned by UCOP, UCSD and SHW on a timely basis.
