Under supervision, the incumbent will assist researchers in Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease to explore the biology of these conditions and decipher underlying mechanisms. Make significant innovative contributions towards research goals. In addition the incumbent is responsible for educating students, with special responsibility for training in tissue processing, immunostaining and morphological analysis including confocal microscopy. The incumbent must be able to perform or be willing to learn to do mouse behavioral analyses and mouse brain dissections. On occasion, candidate may perform SDS-PAGE and Western immunobloting, ELISAs, RNA isolation and RT-qPCR, assist in mouse colony management, and help with general lab maintenance.
Proven theoretical knowledge in Neuroscience, Biology, or Genetics, or equivalent combination of experience and education.
Demonstrated experience working with animals (mice and rats).
Strong experience with processing tissue for immunocytochemical assays, Western blots.
Laboratory experience in tissue processing and dissection. Experience in processing/dissecting tissue for staining with antibodies (DAB and fluorescence). Ability to make significant innovative contributions towards research goals.
Demonstrate expertise in assessing morphological parameters in the brains of disease models including unbiased stereology.
Ability to effectively communicate and train research staff.
Experience in teaching methods of tissue analysis.
Extensive experience with routine culture techniques, sterilization, and proper disposal of tissue culture waste.
Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills that facilitate professional, effective, and courteous interaction with a diverse population.
Proficient computer skills using network systems and web based databases. Experience creating and maintaining databases.
- Knowledge of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Down Syndrome.
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
- Must be available to work some weekends and evenings.
- Must be able to work in an animal research related work environment.
- Willing to work with rats and mice.
